Tangerine Chequing: no monthly fee, and the other charges that can still apply
Tangerine publishes the Chequing Account with no monthly account fee. Other lines, including an NSF fee or an overdraft fee, can still cost money. This page does not promise that every line on your statement will be $0.

No monthly account fee
These amounts are in Canadian dollars. They come from Tangerine's Chequing Account page and the bank fee schedule.
Tangerine says there is no monthly account fee and no minimum balance. Everyday online banking, Interac e-Transfer, debit purchases, bill payments, and pre-authorized transactions are free on that page. The first cheque book of 50 cheques is free. Another cheque book is $50. One stop payment on a cheque is free each year, then $12.50. A replacement card is free. A Canadian draft is $10.
NSF (not enough money) is $10. The fee schedule says that fee is not charged more than once within 2 business days on the same account, and it is waived if the account is short by $10 or less when Tangerine receives the payment. A returned item is $7.50, which is a different line. NSF fees in Canada is the wider page.
Overdraft, cash machines, and paper
Overdraft protection has no monthly fee if the chequing account does not go into overdraft. If it does, the fee is $5, and the schedule says it is charged at most once a month. It applies on the day you go into overdraft if the balance is still overdrawn at 11:59 PM ET. In a later month, if the overdrawn amount grows, the $5 applies on the day it grows. Interest is 19% a year, calculated each day on the closing overdrawn balance, and charged monthly. Tangerine's overdraft FAQ says Quebec residents are no longer charged the overdraft protection fee.
Deposits and withdrawals at a Tangerine machine are free, and so are withdrawals at a Scotiabank or Global ATM Alliance machine. Another cash machine in Canada is $1.50. A machine outside that alliance, in the US or elsewhere, is $3. A foreign currency conversion fee of 2.50% is added to the exchange rate.
A 1 year inactivity fee on the chequing account is $10. On the fee schedule, a paper statement is a savings account charge: $2 for each statement, usually quarterly, and a reprint is $5. That $2 is not a monthly chequing fee. How to download a Tangerine statement PDF covers the file itself.
Find a fee, and what to ask
If the statement has no monthly account fee, that matches what Tangerine publishes for this chequing account. An NSF line, an overdraft line, a cash machine line, or a draft can still be there. Write the date, the printed name, and the amount. A Canadian dollar statement stays in C$.
A monthly fee of $0 for 12 months is $0. One $10 NSF fee is $10. Twelve of those would be $120. The result is arithmetic. It is not a quote from Tangerine, and it is not money Tangerine has agreed to return.
Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Ask which charge the line is. Then ask Tangerine to review it or remove it. They can say no. The fee schedule says the bank can waive a fee at its discretion. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the page for that separate charge. Expenvo does not call Tangerine.
