How to get a Bank of America overdraft fee refunded
Bank of America's personal schedule of fees prints an Overdraft Item Fee of $10.00 each item, and not more than 2 overdraft items a day. The same schedule lists items that are not charged. It does not print a next-day deposit window that refunds a fee after it posts. Asking Bank of America to reverse one is a request.

The $10.00 fee and the daily cap
Opened 20 October 2026. During end-of-day processing, Bank of America either pays the item and overdraws the account, or returns it unpaid. The personal schedule of fees says the bank may charge an Overdraft Item Fee for each overdraft item, but will not charge this fee for more than 2 overdraft items per day. The amount is $10.00 each item. The same figures are in US overdraft fees by bank. The monthly fee for the checking account is on how to waive a Bank of America monthly fee.
Advantage SafeBalance Banking, SafeBalance Banking for Family Banking, and Advantage Savings do not have Overdraft Item Fees. The schedule says those accounts do not have this fee, even though an overdraft can still happen on SafeBalance in some cases, such as a tip added after a restaurant approval.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank, and it does not move the money.
Items the schedule says are not charged
The schedule says Bank of America does not charge an Overdraft Item Fee in these cases. The item is declined or returned unpaid (the payee may still charge you). It is an everyday non-recurring debit card transaction or an ATM transaction. It was authorized when the account had enough available funds. The item is $1 or less, or it overdraws the account by $1 or less. The account has the Decline All Overdraft Setting, even if the account becomes overdrawn. The ACH submission is labeled RETRY PYMT or REDEPCHECK.
A resubmitted ACH that is not labeled that way can still be charged, because the bank says it cannot reliably identify unlabeled retries. If you think a retry was mislabeled, the schedule says you must notify the bank within the timeframes in the Deposit Agreement and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.
Account owners enrolled in BofA Rewards who qualify for the Premier tier receive a waiver of all Overdraft Item Fees. That waiver is a rewards tier, not a phone courtesy.
Balance Connect is optional overdraft protection. Bank of America's Balance Connect page says there is no transfer fee, and you can link up to 5 backup accounts. A linked credit card, home equity line, margin brokerage account, or loan management account can accrue interest. SafeBalance cannot be the covered account or a backup account. Balance Connect moves money before an overdraft item fee. It is not a refund of a fee that already posted.
What to say if a $10.00 fee posted
Bank of America does not publish a deposit-the-next-day refund like some other banks. If a fee is on the statement, the ask is whether one of the $0 cases above already applied, and if not, whether they will reverse this one.
Use the number on the statement. You can read this. "Hello. I am calling about one Overdraft Item Fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $10.00. Please tell me whether this item was declined, was $1 or less, was authorized when the account had enough money, or should have been covered by Decline All or the Premier waiver. If none of those apply, I am asking you to review it and reverse it." Then wait.
They can say no. Write the name and the date if they say yes, and ask which statement will show the credit. A script that works at any bank is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.
What this page does not promise
Two $10.00 fees in one day is the cap the schedule prints. A third overdraft item that day should not add a third Overdraft Item Fee. That is a schedule rule, not a refund program. A fee that posted inside the rules is not something this page says Bank of America must give back. How to ask about an overdraft fee covers the US opt-in rule for one-time debit card and ATM overdrafts. Bank of America's schedule already says those everyday debit and ATM transactions are not charged an Overdraft Item Fee.
