MISC PAYMENT, PAD, and MB BILL PAYMENT on a Canadian statement
MISC PAYMENT and MB BILL PAYMENT are words people see on Canadian statements. Payments Canada's Standard 007, opened 17 October 2026, does not print those exact screen labels. It does define the payment types those words point at, and it says a bank may expand the short abbreviation.

The codes Payments Canada publishes
Standard 007 is the list of transaction codes and return reason codes for Automated Funds Transfer payments. Payments Canada says a transaction code is a three digit code a payment originator uses to identify a payment, so customers can tell payment types apart. Code 450 is Misc. Payments. The English and French abbreviation on that row is MSP/DIV. Code 430 is Bill Payment. Its abbreviation is BPY/FAC. Nearby bill codes include 431 Telephone Bill Payment, 433 Hydro Bill Payment, 436 Utility Bill Payment, 437 Internet Access Payment (IAP/PAI), and 438 Water Bill Payment (WBP/CE).
Note 3 on that standard says the mnemonic under the abbreviation heading is a suggested minimum three character description. Direct clearers may expand it, as long as they remain within the generic type. That is why a statement can say MISC PAYMENT instead of MSP, and still be inside type 450 Misc. Payments. A line that says bill payment, including a line with extra letters your bank adds in front, can be an expanded form of type 430. Standard 007 does not print the exact words MB BILL PAYMENT, and it does not define the letters MB. Do not guess that MB is a city or a product. Use the payee name in your bill payment list, and ask the bank if the extra letters are theirs.
Code 453 is Bill Payment Error Correction, abbreviation BPC/CPF. A second, smaller, or opposite line near a bill payment can be that correction. Code 470 is Fees/Dues (FEE/FRA). Code 480 is Donations (DON/DON). Those are not misc. payments, even if the dollar amounts look similar.
The full list of these short names is on statement codes. The dollar fees on the account itself are on Canadian bank fees.
How this is different from a PAD
A bill payment is you telling the bank to pay a payee. A pre-authorized debit is a company withdrawing money under an agreement. Standard 007 uses both ideas. Ranges 200 to 229 and 330 to 599 are labeled Pre-Authorized Transactions and include payroll, rent, taxes, and the bill payment codes above. Range 700 to 749 is labeled Commercial Pre-Authorized Debits (PADs). Code 700 is Business PAD, abbreviation BUS/ENT. Code 718 is Commercial Bill Payment, abbreviation CBP/PFE.
Note 4 says all 700 series transaction types carry a recourse period of 10 business days, except transaction code 717, Commercial Cash Management, which has no recourse as per Rule H1. That 10 business day note is about the 700 series commercial codes in this standard. It is not the consumer rule for a personal pre-authorized debit. How a personal PAD shows up, and how to question one you did not agree to, is on ACH debit and pre-authorized debit. Use that page for the consumer steps. Use this page to tell a bill payment from a miscellaneous payment and from a commercial PAD code.
Return codes are a third list, in the 900s. Code 901 is NSF (debit only), abbreviation NSF/DSP. Code 903 is Payment Stopped/Recalled (STP/ARR). Code 915 is No Agreement Existed (ANP/NOG). You may see the reason more often than the number. An NSF line is the return. The original MISC PAYMENT or bill payment is a different line.
How to match the line
Open the bill payment history in the same bank and compare the payee, the amount, and the date. A MISC PAYMENT that matches a transfer or a one off payment you sent is type 450's idea of a miscellaneous payment, expanded into words. A bill payment that matches a payee you added is type 430. If the payee is wrong, the bank's bill payment screen is where that payee was chosen.
If the line is a PAD and you did not agree to the company's withdrawal, do not treat it as a bill payment you can delete after the fact. The consumer page linked above is the one that separates those clocks. A purchase at a store with your debit card is neither of these. That is an Interac purchase.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge.
