What an OPENAI *CHATGPT charge means on your statement

People look up OPENAI *CHATGPT because that is the text on the statement. OpenAI's help pages do not print that exact line. They tell you to check invoices, and to keep ChatGPT and the API on separate bills.

Why the line looks like that

OpenAI says ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems. A ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Business subscription is not the same bill as API usage. API charges depend on the models and features you use. OpenAI points to its API pricing page for current rates and does not print those rates on the billing help page.

A ChatGPT subscription can be billed on the web, through the Apple App Store, or through Google Play. OpenAI says subscriptions on more than one platform can create separate charges. Receipts for an Apple or Google subscription do not appear in OpenAI's web invoice list. Check that store's purchase history.

How to find the invoice

For Plus or Pro, OpenAI says to open Settings, then Account, then Payment, then Manage. Invoice History in that billing portal is where you download past invoices. If Invoice History is missing or empty, sign in to the correct account. For Business, a workspace owner opens workspace settings, then Billing, then Invoices. Only an owner can update the payment method or view invoices.

API organization owners look at API billing, not the ChatGPT settings page. Adding a payment method for the API does not replace the ChatGPT subscription.

If you do not recognize it

OpenAI says to check invoices first. The charge may match a subscription or an API credit purchase, or someone else with the card may have made it. If it still does not match, contact OpenAI Support from the Help Center. OpenAI says unauthorized charges have to be validated before a refund, and to contact the bank if you believe the charge is unauthorized. If a bank dispute is already open, OpenAI says it cannot issue a separate refund while that dispute is active or after the bank has returned the funds.
