How to get a Chase overdraft fee refunded

Chase's fee schedule prints a $34 overdraft fee during nightly processing, and it caps that at 3 fees a business day, up to $102. Chase Overdraft Assist can keep the fee at $0 when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less. Asking Chase to reverse a fee that sits outside that rule is a request. Chase can say no.

When the $34 fee posts

Opened 20 October 2026. The Chase deposit account fee schedule (the ABSF PDF) says Chase charges a $34 Overdraft Fee per transaction during nightly processing, beginning with the first transaction that overdraws the account balance by more than $50. The same line caps it at a maximum of 3 fees per business day, up to $102. The everyday checking row is also on Chase Total Checking fees and in US overdraft fees by bank.

Standard Overdraft Practice comes with checking. Chase may pay checks, automatic payments, and recurring debit card purchases into overdraft at its discretion. Everyday debit card and ATM transactions are declined, with no overdraft fee, unless you opted in to Chase Debit Card Coverage. A declined debit card or ATM request is not charged an overdraft fee.

Chase Overdraft Assist

Chase Overdraft Assist does not require enrollment. The fee schedule says you avoid the Overdraft Fee if you are overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day, or if you are overdrawn by more than $50 and you bring the account balance to overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the next business day.

The schedule's example starts Monday with $5, pays three $25 checks, and ends Monday overdrawn by $70. A $30 cash deposit by 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT) on Tuesday leaves the account overdrawn by $40. Chase says no $34 fee is charged, because the end of that business day is overdrawn by $50 or less. Without that deposit, the fee would post.

The schedule also says no Overdraft Fee if the transaction is $5 or less, if a debit card transaction was authorized when the available balance was enough, or if a check or ACH payment is returned unpaid. A later presentment that Chase pays can still be charged. Some account types may not charge these fees. Match the product information for the account name on your statement.

To cover the account before nightly processing, the schedule points at a branch before it closes, a Chase ATM before 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT), or chase.com, the Chase Mobile app, or Zelle before 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT). A check deposit in that window assumes Chase does not place a hold and the check is not returned.

What to say on the call

Use the number on the statement. Chase's customer service page lists 1-800-935-9935 for personal banking. If the statement prints a different number, use the statement.

You can read this and fill in the date. "Hello. I am calling about one fee. The date is [date]. The line says Overdraft Fee. The amount is $34. Please tell me whether Chase Overdraft Assist already covers this one, because the account was overdrawn by $50 or less, or a deposit brought it there by the end of the next business day. If it does not, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it." Then stop and let them answer.

If they say yes, ask when the credit will show. If they say no, ask how to make a complaint. There is no success rate on this page. A general way to ask, for any bank, is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.

What Assist does not do

Assist is Chase's own cushion. It is not a promise that Chase refunds every overdraft fee, and it is not the next-day window another bank prints. A fee that posted because the account was still overdrawn by more than $50 at the end of the next business day is outside the example in the schedule. Asking anyway is allowed. Chase can refuse. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the US consent rule for debit card and ATM coverage. It does not require Chase to remove a fee already on the statement.
