The $25 paid item

Opened 21 October 2026. The figures are from the overdraft disclosure on First Citizens' personal checking page. Except for Sure Advantage and Together Card, which are not eligible for overdraft service, First Citizens decides whether to pay an item or return it unpaid when available funds are not enough. Paying the item creates an overdraft.

On an eligible consumer account, the bank charges $25 each time it pays an item that overdraws the account, up to 3 overdraft charges a business day. It does not charge for an overdraft caused by a transaction of $5.00 or less. It does not charge for an item returned unpaid. You have to repay an overdraft right away. Consumers can decline overdraft service. The page also says First Citizens offers overdraft protection programs and points to the deposit account agreement for the rest.

The checking page lists 888-323-4732, also written as 888-FC DIRECT, for opening an account and for a stop payment. Use the number on your statement for a fee that already posted.

The line on your own statement is the one that counts. Upload it on the upload page. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not call the institution.

This is not the monthly fee

Primary, Select, Premier, and Prestige have their own monthly fees. Prestige can be $25 a month when the waiver is missed. That $25 is the monthly maintenance fee, not this overdraft charge. A California and Massachusetts brochure opened on 17 October 2026 printed the same $25 paid-item overdraft fee. This page uses the personal checking disclosure opened on 21 October 2026. Another state's brochure can still differ. Match the account name before you treat a $25 line as an overdraft.
