What a GOOGLE* charge means on your statement

A purchase from Google usually starts with GOOGLE* and ends with a product name. The name after the star is the clue. Banks sometimes shorten it.

Why the line looks like that

Google Pay's help page says a Google purchase starts with GOOGLE* and ends with the Google product or another descriptor. Some of those names may appear shortened. If you bought from a store that is not Google, Google says the charge shows that store's brand instead.

On that same table, GOOGLE * followed by a company or a developer is a Play Store app. GOOGLE *Google Play is Play Movies and TV. GOOGLE *GOOGLE is YouTube Premium. GOOGLE *Google Storage is Google Drive. GOOGLE* Google Storage, with the spacing Google prints for that row, is Google One. GOOGLE *SERVICES is Google Fiber and YouTube TV. GOOGLE *YouTube Videos is YouTube Movies.

YouTube's own page says YouTube purchases appear as GOOGLE*YouTube and then the service name. Its example is GOOGLE*YouTube TV. If your line matches that shape, use YouTube's page. If it matches GOOGLE *GOOGLE, Google Pay's table calls that YouTube Premium. Follow the line you actually have. An apple.com/bill charge is not Google.

A hold is not a charge

GOOGLE *TEMPORARY HOLD is a pending check that the card is valid. Google says the hold goes away when the transaction goes through. It can show when you pay through a Google service or when Chrome autofill uses the card.

How to see the purchase, cancel, or report it

Google One's help page says to open payments.google.com, then Activity, and select a transaction. For a subscription, open Subscriptions and services on that site and choose Manage.

Play purchases appear as GOOGLE* and the app developer, GOOGLE* and the app name, or GOOGLE* and a content type. Google's example of the last one is GOOGLE*Books. If the charge is in your Play order history, Google says it is from Play. If the statement line does not begin with Google, Google says it did not come from Play.

For a card, debit card, or PayPal charge, Google says it can take action within 120 days of the transaction. After 120 days, Google says to contact the fraud department for the card or PayPal. YouTube uses the same 120 day window for a digital purchase you did not make. Check with family first. Google says a family member may have made the purchase.

Google's pages do not print a different statement name for Canada. Upload the statement to Expenvo and it lists every subscription it finds. Expenvo does not cancel a Google subscription for you.
