Overdraft protection transfer fees at US banks
Overdraft protection can move money from a linked savings account, or advance it from a credit account, when checking does not cover a payment. That transfer is not the same charge as an overdraft fee. This page is the transfer rule each bank prints. It is not the fee for a payment the bank returns.

What each bank prints
Opened 16 October 2026. The dollar amounts for an overdraft fee itself, when a bank prints one, are on US overdraft fees by bank. Do not mix that fee into these rows.
| Bank | What the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| Chase | There is not a fee for an Overdraft Protection transfer | The deposit agreement links a Chase personal savings account as the backup. The exact amount needed is transferred. If the backup cannot cover the payment, checking can still be overdrawn, and overdraft fees or interest may apply. This section is a savings backup. It does not say a transfer from a credit line is free. |
| Bank of America Balance Connect | We do not charge a transfer fee | Balance Connect transfers available money from eligible linked backup accounts. The same page says linked credit accounts are subject to interest charges. The zip code form on the overdrafts page did not print a dollar, so this row uses the Balance Connect page. |
| Wells Fargo | No transfer fee and no advance fee | Wells Fargo says it does not charge transfer fees or advance fees for Overdraft Protection. You can link up to two eligible accounts, one savings and one credit. If savings has $25 or more and can cover the overdraft, Wells Fargo transfers the exact amount needed or a minimum of $25. If savings has less than $25 or less than the amount needed, it transfers the available balance. An advance from a credit account accrues interest from the date of the advance. |
| Capital One 360 Checking | Free transfer | The page says you can choose to automatically transfer funds to checking to cover overdrafts, and it calls that a free transfer. It also says Capital One does not charge overdraft fees for consumer checking accounts, and that 360 Checking has no fees. This row is 360 Checking. It is not every Capital One product. |
Banks not in this table
Citi, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist, Ally, and Discover are not here. A page that prints the fee for an automatic transfer from savings or a credit line was not opened for those banks on 16 October 2026. This page does not fill the gap from a roundup.
Asking the bank to review an overdraft fee already on the statement is a different step. How to ask about an overdraft fee is that request. The bank can say no.
Questions
- Is the transfer the same as an overdraft fee?
- No. These pages are about moving or advancing money so the payment can go through. An overdraft fee, when a bank charges one, is a separate line. Chase says checking can still be overdrawn if the backup cannot cover the payment.
- Does every bank print no transfer fee?
- The four pages opened here do. Chase says there is not a fee for an Overdraft Protection transfer from savings. Bank of America says it does not charge a transfer fee for Balance Connect. Wells Fargo says it does not charge transfer fees or advance fees. Capital One calls the 360 Checking transfer a free transfer. Other banks were not opened.
- Does a credit line transfer add interest?
- Bank of America says linked credit accounts are subject to interest. Wells Fargo says an advance from a credit account accrues interest from the date of the advance. Chase's sentence opened here is about a savings backup, not a credit line.
- Why is my bank missing?
- Citi, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist, Ally, and Discover did not have a transfer-fee page opened on 16 October 2026. A missing row is not a statement that the transfer is free.
