Pending vs posted charges and holds

A pending charge is an approval, not always the final amount. Hotels, gas stations, and car rentals often approve more than you will pay. When the real amount posts, the hold drops and the statement shows the purchase. The statement PDF is the posted record.

A hold is not the final charge

One Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. consumer credit card agreement in the CFPB collection, opened 16 October 2026, says transactions at some merchants, including hotels, car rental companies, restaurants, and gas stations, may be authorized for more than the actual purchase. That makes less credit available for several days, usually until the merchant sends the actual purchase amount. That sentence is from that agreement. It is not a national rule, and it does not print a percent or a longer day count.

RBC's How to Read Your Credit Card Statement page says available credit subtracts purchases that are authorized but not yet posted. Scotiabank's fees page says available credit on the statement is calculated when the statement is issued and may not include transactions that have not yet posted.

Expenvo flags possible duplicate charges and lists subscriptions from a statement PDF in the app, and it does not dispute the charge.

Why the amount changes

The approval can be a guess: a hotel night, a full tank, or the rental estimate. The posted line is the bill. If you add a meal, extra miles, or fuel, the posted amount can be higher than the hold. If the estimate was high, the posted amount can be lower.

A pending line and a later posted line are not automatically two charges. Wait until the pending line drops. If two posted lines remain for the same purchase, use charged twice for the same thing.

Questions

How long does a hotel or gas hold last?
The Wells Fargo agreement in the CFPB collection says several days, usually until the merchant sends the actual purchase amount. It does not print a fixed number of days for every merchant.
Does the hold show on the statement PDF?
A statement is issued after charges post. Scotiabank says the available credit on the statement may not include transactions that have not yet posted. A hold that never posts is not a line on that PDF.
Is a pending charge the same as a duplicate?
No. A pending approval and the later posted purchase can be the same transaction. Two posted lines are a different question.
Does Expenvo dispute a hold?
No. Expenvo reads the statement PDF, flags possible duplicate posted charges, and lists subscriptions. It does not dispute a charge.
