RBC foreign currency fee is 2.5%

By Karla CastroUpdated October 31, 2026

On the RBC RateAdvantage Visa disclosure, the Canadian dollar amount charged to the account is 2.5% over the benchmark rate. That disclosure is one RBC Royal Bank card. RBC Bank, the U.S. cross border card, prints different fees, including a Signature Black Plus card with no foreign transaction fee.

The RateAdvantage 2.5%

Opened 31 October 2026. The RateAdvantage Visa disclosure, form 103378 (07/2022), still opens at RBC's cardholder documents. It says the exchange rate on the statement, to six decimal places, is the converted Canadian dollar amount divided by the transaction currency amount. Rounding can make it differ from the original benchmark rate. The Canadian dollar amount charged to the account is 2.5% over the benchmark rate. Some transactions convert straight to Canadian dollars. Others convert to U.S. dollars first, then to Canadian dollars. The benchmark rate is the rate applied at conversion and is generally set daily. RBC points to visa.com/exchange for the original benchmark rate.

The statement can show one Canadian dollar amount for the purchase. The 2.5% is inside that amount, described as 2.5% over the benchmark rate. It may not be a separate fee line. This row is RateAdvantage. It is not every RBC card.

RBC Bank cards, which are a U.S. product

RBC's cross border page is RBC Bank, not the Canadian RateAdvantage card. It says there are no foreign transaction fees for purchases in the U.S. or in U.S. dollars, and there may be fees for a purchase in a foreign currency. The same disclaimer prints RBC Bank foreign transaction fees: Visa Signature Black is 1.5% of the U.S. dollar amount, Visa Signature Black Plus does not charge a foreign transaction fee, and Visa Platinum is 3.0% of the U.S. dollar amount. The Prime Rate note on that page is dated 17 September 2026.

Using the Signature Black Plus card is how that page says you skip the foreign transaction fee. A Canadian RateAdvantage card is still the 2.5% disclosure above.

Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank, and it does not move the money.
