How to waive an RBC monthly account fee

You get the published rules for RBC Day to Day Banking, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions for the phone. Asking RBC to remove a fee already charged is a request. RBC can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

A monthly account fee is a charge from the bank for the account itself. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. A refund is money back. It is not a new expense.

An extra debit fee, an NSF fee (not enough money), and an overdraft charge are different lines. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the page for that separate charge. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps the plan fee and the extra lines apart.

Match the account name on your statement to the current RBC page. Another RBC chequing package can have a different monthly fee. The figures below are the ones on the Day to Day page. Your account agreement controls the fee, not this page.

RBC Day to Day Banking

These amounts are in Canadian dollars. They come from RBC's Day to Day Banking page. Monthly fees at large Canadian banks lists this account next to other banks.

RBC lists a standard monthly fee of $4. The page says the account includes 12 debit transactions each month, and $1.25 for each debit after that. RBC says Interac e-Transfer transactions are free on its Canadian dollar bank accounts and are not counted in that monthly debit total. Read the Day to Day page for any limit on those e-Transfers. An extra debit fee is not the monthly fee.

The same page lists a $0 monthly fee with the Seniors Rebate, for an Indigenous person, and for an RDSP beneficiary. It also says the Value Program rebate can bring the monthly fee as low as $0. RBC says a partial or full rebate depends on enrolling, holding eligible product categories, and at least one activity in the previous calendar month. The categories on that page are a personal credit card, personal investments, a residential mortgage, and a linked small business relationship. More than one product in the same category counts as one category. The activity is a monthly direct deposit, a monthly pre-authorized payment, or an eligible bill payment. The exact rebate is in those Value Program terms.

RBC says you can receive only one monthly fee rebate on the account, and that it applies the highest rebate you qualify for. A separate promotional waiver for new accounts, when RBC offers one, has its own rules. It is not the standard $4 fee.

Find the fee on the statement

Read the account name first. Then look for a line named monthly fee, account fee, or plan fee. Write the date, the printed name, and the amount. A Canadian dollar RBC statement stays in C$. How to read a statement PDF separates fees, purchases, payments, and refunds.

If RBC later credits the fee back, that credit is money returned. It is not a new expense, and it is not a subscription. Do not put the monthly fee on a subscription list.

A $4 fee charged every month for 12 months is $48. The result is arithmetic. It is not a quote from RBC, and it is not money RBC has agreed to return.

What to ask RBC

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask which account package is on the account. Ask which rebate RBC says applies: seniors, Indigenous person, RDSP beneficiary, or the Value Program. Ask whether you were enrolled, and whether the previous calendar month had one of the activities the page lists. Then ask RBC to review the fee or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.

If the answer is no, ask what would have to be true next month for the fee to be $0, and ask for the bank's complaint steps. Start with RBC, then the outside office the bank names. Canadian bank fees explains that path. Expenvo does not file the complaint.

Upload a statement in Expenvo to see the bank fee lines it recognizes, listed on their own. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo does not call RBC, and it does not promise the fee will be removed.

Questions

Does every RBC account cost $4 a month?
No. The $4 figure is the standard monthly fee RBC lists for Day to Day Banking. Another package at RBC can have a different fee. Match the account name on your statement.
Does the Value Program always make the fee $0?
No. RBC says the rebate can be as low as $0, and that a partial or full rebate depends on enrolling, holding eligible products, and one listed activity in the previous calendar month. The exact rebate is in the Value Program terms on the Day to Day page.
Will RBC remove a fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says RBC has to waive a fee already on the statement.
Can Expenvo tell me the fee will be $0 next month?
No. Expenvo can list a bank fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether you will meet RBC's rule next month.
