How to waive a CIBC monthly account fee
You get the published monthly fees for named CIBC chequing accounts, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions for the phone. Asking CIBC to remove a fee already charged is a request. CIBC can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.
What this fee is
A monthly fee is a charge from the bank for the account itself. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. A refund is money back. It is not a new expense.
An extra transaction fee is a different line. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps the plan fee and the extra lines apart. Match the account name on your statement. A US dollar account at CIBC is a different product. Do not use the Canadian dollar figures for it. Your account agreement controls the fee, not this page.
Everyday Chequing and CIBC Smart
These amounts are in Canadian dollars. They come from the CIBC account comparison. Monthly fees at large Canadian banks lists these accounts next to other banks.
CIBC lists Everyday Chequing at a $4.00 monthly fee, with 18 transactions included and $1.25 for each transaction over 18. It says Interac e-Transfer has no extra fee and is included in the monthly fee. That page does not list a minimum balance that removes the $4.00 Everyday fee.
The same page lists CIBC Smart at $16.95, or $0 monthly for up to 3 accounts, when one CIBC Smart Account has an end of day balance of $4,000 on each day of that month. It says Smart includes unlimited transactions, including Interac e-Transfer. The balance has to be there at the end of every day of that month. One day below $4,000 means you do not meet the rebate the page describes.
The compare page also describes a basic account with no monthly fee for seniors over 65, with 18 transactions included and $1.25 after that, and no extra fee for Interac e-Transfer. It also names student, apprentice, and newcomer versions of CIBC Smart. Those have their own terms on the CIBC page. This guide does not copy a fee for them that the comparison extract did not state.
Find the fee on the statement
Read the account name first. Then look for a line named monthly fee, account fee, or plan fee. Write the date, the printed name, and the amount. A Canadian dollar CIBC statement stays in C$. How to read a statement PDF separates fees, purchases, payments, and refunds.
If CIBC later credits the fee back, that credit is money returned. It is not a new expense, and it is not a subscription.
A $4.00 fee charged every month for 12 months is $48. The result is arithmetic. It is not a quote from CIBC, and it is not money CIBC has agreed to return.
What to ask CIBC
Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. CIBC's contact page lists telephone banking in English at 1-800-465-2422 for Canada and the United States. The account comparison lists a call number of 1-800-385-2582. If a number on your statement disagrees with either page, use the statement.
Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask which account is on the statement. Ask whether the Smart end of day balance was met on every day of the month, or whether a seniors account with no monthly fee applies. Then ask CIBC to review the fee or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.
If the answer is no, ask what would have to be true next month for the fee to be $0, and ask for the bank's complaint steps. Start with CIBC, then the outside office the bank names. Canadian bank fees explains that path. Expenvo does not file the complaint.
Upload a statement in Expenvo to see the bank fee lines it recognizes, listed on their own. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo does not call CIBC, and it does not promise the fee will be removed.
Questions
- Does a $4,000 balance remove the Everyday Chequing fee?
- No. The $4,000 end of day balance is the rebate CIBC describes for CIBC Smart, for up to 3 accounts, when one CIBC Smart Account stays at that balance every day of the month. Everyday Chequing is listed at $4.00, and that compare page does not list a balance that removes it.
- Is there a CIBC account with no monthly fee for seniors?
- The compare page describes a basic account with no monthly fee for seniors over 65, with 18 transactions included and $1.25 after that. Check the account name on your statement before you assume that account is the one you have.
- Will CIBC remove a fee it already charged if I ask?
- They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says CIBC has to waive a fee already on the statement.
- Can Expenvo tell me the fee will be $0 next month?
- No. Expenvo can list a bank fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether the balance will stay at $4,000 every day next month.
