How to waive a Scotiabank monthly account fee

You get the published rules for the Scotiabank Basic Bank Account, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions for the phone or the bank's own chat. Asking Scotiabank to remove a fee already charged is a request. Scotiabank can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

A monthly account fee is a charge from the bank for the account itself. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. A refund is money back. It is not a new expense.

An extra transaction fee is a different line. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps the plan fee and the extra lines apart. Another Scotiabank package can have a different monthly fee. Match the account name on your statement. Your account agreement controls the fee, not this page.

Scotiabank Basic Bank Account

These amounts are in Canadian dollars. They come from the Scotiabank Basic Bank Account page. Monthly fees at large Canadian banks lists this account next to other banks.

Scotiabank lists a monthly account fee of $3.95, or $0 a month if you are eligible. It lists seniors pricing of $0 a month. It says a waiver is available for Indigenous Peoples, RDSP beneficiaries, recipients of the Disability Tax Credit, and Canadians receiving social assistance. Scotiabank says proof of eligibility may be requested, and that the details are in Part 5 of the Day-to-Day Banking Companion Booklet.

The page says the account includes 18 free transactions a month and free Interac e-Transfer transactions. Those included transactions are not a second monthly fee. If a booklet and the account page ever disagree, ask the bank which one applies to your account.

Find the fee on the statement

Read the account name first. Then look for a line named monthly account fee, monthly fee, or plan fee. Write the date, the printed name, and the amount. A Canadian dollar Scotiabank statement stays in C$. How to read a statement PDF separates fees, purchases, payments, and refunds.

If Scotiabank later credits the fee back, that credit is money returned. It is not a new expense, and it is not a subscription.

A $3.95 fee charged every month for 12 months is $47.40. The result is arithmetic. It is not a quote from Scotiabank, and it is not money Scotiabank has agreed to return.

What to ask Scotiabank

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Scotiabank's contact page lists 1-800-472-6842, and it says a signed-in client can open the Scotia app and use chat. Hours and menus can change. If a number on your statement disagrees with this page, use the statement.

Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask which account package is on the account. Ask whether Scotiabank has you listed for seniors pricing or for one of the waivers on the Basic page, and whether they need proof. Then ask Scotiabank to review the fee or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.

If the answer is no, ask what would have to be true for the fee to be $0, and ask for the bank's complaint steps. Start with Scotiabank, then the outside office the bank names. Canadian bank fees explains that path. Expenvo does not file the complaint.

Questions

Is the Scotiabank Basic monthly fee always $3.95?
No. The Basic Bank Account page lists $3.95, or $0 a month if you are eligible. It lists seniors pricing of $0 a month, and it lists waivers for Indigenous Peoples, RDSP beneficiaries, Disability Tax Credit recipients, and Canadians receiving social assistance. Proof may be requested.
Does this page cover every Scotiabank account?
No. These figures are for the Basic Bank Account. Another package can have a different monthly fee. Match the account name on your statement.
Will Scotiabank remove a fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says Scotiabank has to waive a fee already on the statement.
Can Expenvo tell me the fee will be $0 next month?
No. Expenvo can list a bank fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether you meet a waiver on the Basic page.
