What VISA DDA PUR and POS DEBIT mean on a statement

A checking statement can show VISA, then DDA, then PUR, then a store name, sometimes next to the words POS DEBIT. Visa's public pages opened 17 October 2026 do not define that exact phrase. They do say how an issuer should show the merchant, and they use DDA as an account type code.

What the pages do and do not say

Visa's DPS card and account services reference lists an account type code. It says the code is an abbreviated code used to identify the account type in DPS Debit, and that it is required when the account is created. The allowed values include DDA, SAV, CRD, INV, LON, OTH, and Prepaid. The page does not spell out those abbreviations. It does not say that a consumer statement must contain the words VISA DDA PUR. If your line uses those letters, they came from your bank's description, not from a sentence on that Visa page.

The Federal Reserve's Regulation D definitions, section 204.2, do define a demand deposit. A demand deposit means a deposit that is payable on demand, or a deposit issued with an original maturity or required notice period of less than seven days, or a deposit representing funds for which the bank does not reserve the right to require at least seven days' written notice of an intended withdrawal. The Federal Reserve says demand deposits may be in the form of checking accounts. That is the regulatory meaning of a demand deposit. It is not a Visa rule that the letters DDA on your statement must be read that way, but it is the definition banks use for that kind of account.

Do not read PUR from a different Visa code list. Visa's virtual payment rules use a rule code PUR that means block purchases above a threshold. That is a control on a commercial card, not the three letters in a checking description. This guide does not treat those as the same PUR.

The full list of these short names is on statement codes. The bank labels CHECKCARD and POS DEBIT are explained on what CHECKCARD and POS DEBIT mean. The date inside PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON is on that guide.

The part you can match: the merchant name

Visa's standards reminder for the merchant name field says the merchant name must be the name the merchant primarily uses to identify itself to its customers. It must be displayed at the store or on the website or app, and it must be spelled the same way on the receipt, the authorization, the clearing record, and dispute records. For some payment facilitators, staged digital wallets, and bill payment aggregators, Visa says the name field uses an asterisk to separate the entity and the underlying seller.

The same reminder tells issuers to pass the merchant name through without truncating or otherwise altering it, because cutting it makes the charge harder to recognize. Visa's rules, as that document describes them, require the cardholder statement to include the data from the clearing record that identifies the merchant, or the sponsored merchant and its payment facilitator, or the digital wallet operator and the retailer, and that enables the cardholder to contact the merchant.

So when a line reads like a code and then a store, ignore the code until you have used the store name, the phone number, and the city. Search email for that store and the amount. A POS DEBIT label on the same line means the bank is also calling it a debit card purchase at a terminal. The merchant name is still the part that tells you who was paid. CHECKCARD and POS DEBIT covers those bank labels without repeating this account type question.

If the merchant name is still unfamiliar

Ask your bank what DDA and PUR mean on their statement. Banks do not share one abbreviation list, and Visa's pages opened for this guide do not publish VISA DDA PUR as a required string. The bank that printed the line is the one that can say whether PUR on that statement means a purchase.

If the merchant name matches a receipt, the line is that purchase from the checking account, even if the letters in front are confusing. If nobody allowed it, the US debit dispute steps are on dispute a charge in the US. A second posted amount is charged twice.

Questions

Does Visa define VISA DDA PUR?
Not on the pages opened for this guide. Visa uses DDA as one account type code among SAV, CRD, and others. It does not print the statement phrase VISA DDA PUR.
What is a demand deposit?
The Federal Reserve's Regulation D says a demand deposit is payable on demand, or has a maturity or required notice of less than seven days, or the bank does not reserve a seven day written notice. Checking accounts are one form it lists.
What should I read on the line?
Visa says the statement should identify the merchant and give a way to contact them, and that issuers should pass the merchant name through. Use the store name, the phone number, and the amount.
Is POS DEBIT the same guide?
POS DEBIT and CHECKCARD are bank labels for a debit card purchase. They have their own page. This page is the VISA DDA PUR wording and the merchant name Visa requires.
