How to get a Wells Fargo overdraft fee refunded

Wells Fargo's overdraft services page says an overdraft fee of $35 may apply when it pays an item the account cannot cover. Consumer accounts are limited to three overdraft fees a business day. Extra Day Grace Period is the bank's own way to waive fees after a deposit. A refund outside that rule is a request.

The $35 fee and the consumer cap

Opened 20 October 2026. The overdraft services page says if Wells Fargo pays an overdraft, it assesses a fee of $35 per item paid into overdraft, and it limits the number of overdraft fees on consumer accounts to three per business day. The consumer fee schedule says the same $35 per item, and that Wells Fargo will not assess an overdraft fee on items of $10 or less. It also says no overdraft fee if both the ending daily balance and the available balance are overdrawn by $10 or less after all transactions are processed. Everyday Checking is the row in US overdraft fees by bank. The monthly fee is on how to waive a Wells Fargo monthly fee.

Standard coverage is included for checks, transactions that use the account number, and automatic bill payments. ATM withdrawals and everyday one-time debit card purchases are not paid into overdraft unless you enroll in Debit Card Overdraft Service. A declined or returned item has no Wells Fargo overdraft fee. The payee can still charge you.

Clear Access Banking is different. The fee schedule says overdraft fees are not applicable to that account, and standard overdraft coverage cannot be added.

Extra Day Grace Period and Overdraft Protection

The overdraft services page says Extra Day Grace Period gives you an extra business day to make deposits to avoid overdraft fees. It says if your available balance is zero or positive as of 11:59 Eastern Time, Wells Fargo will waive the associated overdraft fees. The Debit Card Overdraft Service section says the $35 fee may apply when a covering deposit or transfer is not made before the cutoff on the same business day, or is not otherwise covered by Extra Day Grace Period. Cutoff times are in the Deposit Account Agreement.

Overdraft Protection is optional. You can link one eligible savings account and one eligible credit account. Wells Fargo says it does not charge a transfer fee or an advance fee for Overdraft Protection. An advance from a credit account accrues interest from the date of the advance. The fee schedule's savings transfer rule: if available savings is $25 or more and covers the overdraft, Wells Fargo transfers the exact amount needed or a minimum of $25. If available savings is less, it transfers the available balance. A credit card advance uses a similar $25 minimum. A line of credit advance is generally in $100 or $300 increments, and interest may apply.

You can remove standard coverage at a branch or by calling 1-800-869-3557. The page says overdraft fees can still apply after you remove coverage, for items that are paid. Returned and declined items still have no Wells Fargo fee.

A short script

Call the number on the statement, or 1-800-869-3557. "Hello. I am calling about one overdraft fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $35. Please tell me whether Extra Day Grace Period already waives it, because the available balance was zero or positive by 11:59 Eastern Time, or whether the item was $10 or less. If neither applies, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."

Stop there. If the answer is yes, ask which day the credit posts. If the answer is no, ask for the complaint steps. This page has no success rate. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the version that is not tied to one bank.

What grace does not cover

Extra Day Grace Period is Wells Fargo's rule for waiving fees it associates with that window. It is not a promise for a fee on a business account, and the overdraft page's business cap is a different number, so do not use the consumer cap of three on a business account. It also does not turn a paid item into a free item when the available balance was still negative at the time the page names. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the US opt-in rule. Wells Fargo already will not charge the overdraft fee on ATM and everyday debit card transactions unless you enrolled in Debit Card Overdraft Service.
