What an Ancestry charge means on your statement

An Ancestry charge is usually a family history membership, a related site such as Newspapers.com or Fold3, or a DNA kit. Memberships renew until you cancel them. Ancestry says prices and terms can change, and it will give you notice before a new price applies to a renewal. The cancel pages do not print one required card code. The name on the line usually includes Ancestry, or the app store that billed you.

Match the line to the membership

Ancestry's billing help says Account Settings shows who bills you, the renew date, the billing cycle, and the renewal price before taxes, banking fees, or membership changes. Ancestry, Apple iTunes, and Google Play are the billing providers it lists for memberships. A gift membership does not automatically renew. If the statement says Apple or Google, cancel in that store. Those lines are on APPLE.COM/BILL and GOOGLE*.

Ancestry's renewal terms say that unless an offer says otherwise, subscriptions renew automatically, except gifts and pay-per-view. You are charged the rate stated at purchase, plus tax, at the start of the billing term, until a new price takes effect. Ancestry will give reasonable notice before a price or term change. If you do not want the new price, cancel before the renewal.

The help pages opened 17 October 2026 do not print a statement descriptor. Do not invent one. Compare the statement amount with Order history in the account.

How to cancel

Ancestry's cancel article says canceling turns off automatic renewal and does not end the current period immediately. Go to Account Settings, find the membership, select Cancel membership or Cancel trial, and continue until you have a cancellation confirmation number. You also get an email. Repeat the steps for each membership. You can keep using the paid benefits until the expiration date.

Some billing providers want you to cancel at least 24 hours before the next cycle. If Ancestry billed you, use the renewal terms. If you were charged after a confirmation number, contact Ancestry. A second Ancestry account is another reason a charge can continue after you canceled one login.

Where a pause is offered, you can delay the renewal for up to 2 months at the end of the current cycle, once per cycle. You lose paid content during the pause. The subscription restarts at the price it would have renewed at, unless you cancel while it is paused.

Refunds and cancellation fees

These amounts are from Ancestry's renewal terms opened 17 October 2026. Ancestry says prices and terms may change. A monthly subscription can be canceled any time prior to two business days before the renewal date. It is not eligible for a refund, except where the terms say otherwise, and you keep access for the rest of the paid period.

For a longer plan billed up front through Ancestry, canceling before the period ends does not refund you, and you keep access until the end. If the first term did not start with a trial, during the first 14 days you can cancel immediately for a full refund and lose access right away, or cancel at the end of the period with no refund. After a renewal, or if you subscribed to Ancestry before, the terms say you are not eligible for a refund.

Some longer plans are billed monthly but commit you to 6 or 12 months. If you cancel early you may be charged a cancellation fee, and you keep access for the months you already paid. On www.ancestry.com the fee is the lesser of $25 USD for a 6 month plan or $50 USD for a 12 month plan, plus tax, or the remaining cost. On www.ancestry.ca the fee is the lesser of 25 CAD or the remaining cost, to the extent the law allows. During the first 14 days of a first term that did not start with a trial, you can cancel immediately for a full refund of the first month's fee and lose access, or cancel at the end of the first month subject to the fee.

A US AncestryDNA kit can be refunded if you ask and return the kit within 60 days of the order, minus a $15 processing fee. Shipping and the processing charge are not refunded. Outside the United States, the terms give 14 days from receiving the kit for a withdrawal refund. A DNA line and a membership line are different charges. Cancel the membership even if you return a kit.

Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo groups the same merchant when a similar amount shows up again about a week, a month, or a year apart, and it lists a line that already says membership or subscription. You can also mark a name yourself. It does not cancel the plan, and it does not count the charge as savings. One month can miss a yearly renewal. The longer checklist is find subscriptions from a statement.

Questions

Does canceling Ancestry stop access the same day?
Ancestry's help page says you keep the membership until the expiration date. Immediate loss of access is the option in the first 14 days when you choose a full refund on an eligible first term.
Why is there a fee to cancel?
Ancestry says some 6 month and 12 month memberships that are paid monthly include a discount, so a cancellation fee can apply if you cancel before the term ends. The terms print the fee caps, including 25 CAD on ancestry.ca.
What if Apple or Google billed Ancestry?
Cancel in that store. Ancestry's billing help lists Ancestry, Apple iTunes, and Google Play as the providers. A refund then follows that provider's rules.
