What an Expedia, Booking.com, or Hotels.com charge means

A hotel charge is not always the website you booked on. Pay now can bill Expedia's or Hotels.com's payment company. Pay later can bill the hotel, often in the hotel's currency. Booking.com says it does not charge a booking fee, and that the property decides the prepayment. Match the confirmation before you call the card a fraud.

Three sites, two ways to pay

Read the confirmation email. It says pay now or pay later, the total, the currency, and the cancellation date. The card line should match one of those amounts, or a hold that later drops off. A hold that has not posted is on pending versus posted. A second posted charge, for the room and then for a deposit, can both be real. Compare them with the email before you treat them as a double charge.

Expedia and Hotels.com are in the same group. Expedia's terms say an Expedia Group account also works on Hotels.com and Vrbo, and that the terms on the site you are using are the ones that apply. Booking.com is a different company. Do not use Expedia's rules to explain a Booking.com stay.

Expedia and Hotels.com

Both terms of service, opened 18 October 2026, say you may see Pay Now or Pay Later. Taxes and fees can differ between those two choices. Tax rates and exchange rates can change between the booking and the stay. Pay Now means the company in their payment table typically charges the booking amount when you book. For the United States and for Canada, that table names Travelscape, LLC. A statement that says Travelscape can be an Expedia or Hotels.com pay now booking. The room rate you saw includes the hotel's room amount and a facilitation fee the group keeps. The group can also add a service fee. You are charged the total, including tax recovery charges and service fees.

Pay Later means the travel provider, usually the hotel, typically charges your card in the local currency at the time of the stay, or at the time the booking screen told you. A pay later line may name the hotel, not Expedia or Hotels.com. The local currency can be different from the currency you browsed in. Your card issuer can add a foreign transaction fee on top. That issuer fee is on foreign transaction fees. If the hotel's terminal also offers to convert the bill into your home currency, that second choice is dynamic currency conversion.

A deposit at check in is separate. The terms say some hotels want a card or a cash deposit for extra expenses, and that this deposit is not the booking payment. The terms also let the company or the hotel verify the card with a pre authorization, a nominal fee, or another check, and then charge the card. A pre authorization that falls off is a hold, not a second stay. For a pay later booking, a no show or a late cancel can be the hotel's charge, at the amount in the rules you accepted. Refunds go back to the original payment method, from the party that took the payment. The terms say the group's fees are not refundable unless the booking said they were. Expedia's book now, pay later page uses the words Pay at Property for the choice where you pay at check in. Use the words on your confirmation, because the marketing page and the terms do not use only one label.

Booking.com

Booking.com's FAQ says it does not charge a booking fee, and that it does not charge a reservation fee. Extra charges and taxes you see are set by the property and by local tax rules. Who charges the card, and when, depends on the property. A prepayment is an amount the property charges before the stay. The date and the amount are in that property's policy, which you can also see in the confirmation.

The same FAQ describes a pre authorization as a validity check that temporarily blocks an amount about equal to the reservation. The block comes off later. How long that takes depends on the property and on your card issuer. A deposit or a prepayment is different: it is money taken at booking, and the FAQ says a free cancellation booking returns that amount if you cancel. If you were charged and you cannot tell which of the three it is, the FAQ points you to the property, and to Booking.com's help page for a payment problem.

A pay at property stay can still show a small verification charge, then the hotel's full charge in another currency. Write down both amounts from the confirmation. A resort fee the hotel adds at the desk is the hotel's charge, not a second Booking.com fee, when the confirmation said it was due at the property. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo groups the same merchant when a similar amount shows up again about a week, a month, or a year apart, and it lists a line that already says membership or subscription. You can also mark a name yourself. It does not cancel the plan, and it does not count the charge as savings. One month can miss a yearly renewal. The longer checklist is find subscriptions from a statement.

Questions

Why does my statement say Travelscape instead of Expedia?
Expedia's and Hotels.com's terms say Travelscape, LLC takes the pay now charge for bookings in the United States and in Canada. Match the amount to the confirmation.
I chose pay later. Why is there any charge before I arrive?
The terms allow a pre authorization or a nominal verification charge. Booking.com describes the same kind of temporary block. A hold is not the room payment until it posts and matches the stay.
Does Booking.com add its own booking fee?
Booking.com's FAQ says it does not charge a booking fee or a reservation fee. A prepayment on that booking is the property's policy.
