What a credit adjustment means on your statement

A credit adjustment is money moving back onto the card or the bank account. People also see CR ADJ, statement credit, or retail credit adjustment. The line lowers what you owe, or it raises the balance in a deposit account. It is not a second charge, and it does not always use the store name you remember.

What the banks call it

Chase's page on refunds and returns, opened 17 October 2026, says that after you return an item you receive a statement credit on the credit card account. That credit may show in the online account within a few days. Chase says the exact time varies by issuer and by merchant, and that it should also appear on the monthly statement within one or two billing cycles. If you were carrying a balance, the return reduces what you still owe. If you had already paid the card in full, Chase says the credit can show as a negative balance, which means the issuer owes you that amount. You can spend it down on later purchases, or ask the issuer for a check.

Chase's separate page on statement credits says a statement credit is money credited to the account. It shows in transactions and as a category of account activity. Chase lists three common reasons: a return, rewards or points you redeem against the balance, and a disputed charge the issuer agrees to credit. Chase also says a statement credit deducts from the balance but does not count as a payment. You still owe the minimum payment shown on the statement.

Wells Fargo's credit card help page says that turning the card off does not stop recurring transactions, and it does not stop the posting of refunds, reversals, or credit adjustments. So a credit adjustment can still land after you lock the card. Locking the card is not a way to refuse a refund.

Bank of America's Customized Cash Rewards rules, in the version marked 202308, say that if a rewards check is not cashed before it expires, the bank voids the check and awards the rewards as a statement credit. That credit posts within two billing cycles after the expiration date and appears as a retail credit adjustment. That phrase is one issuer's label for a rewards credit. It is not a promise that every CR ADJ on every bank is a rewards check.

Refund, goodwill, and merchant credit

A merchant credit is the store sending money back for a return or a price change. Match it to the original purchase by the amount and the date, not only by the word ADJUSTMENT. The store name on the credit can be shorter than the name on the receipt, the same way the original charge was short. Search email for the return confirmation.

A goodwill credit is the issuer or the merchant putting money back without a returned product. Chase's list includes a dispute the issuer agrees to credit. Your statement will not always print the word goodwill. If you asked for a fee to be removed, the credit might be the fee amount with a plain description. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the page for that request. The bank can say no. A credit that does appear is the record that they said yes to that amount.

Rewards redeemed as a statement credit are not a refund from a store. Chase says you may need to redeem those yourself in the account. Bank of America says cash rewards redeemed for a statement credit post within three business days of redemption, are generally applied to the balance with the highest APR, and do not replace the minimum payment. If a purchase that earned rewards is later refunded, Bank of America says it may reverse a statement credit.

How to read the line

Write the date, the description, and the amount. A credit should be money in, not money out. On a card, it reduces the balance. On a checking account, it increases the balance. If your app shows a minus on purchases, a credit may show with a plus or with no minus. Do not assume the punctuation. Read the column the bank uses for credits.

One credit and one purchase of the same amount can be a return. Two posted purchases are not a credit. Charged twice is the page when both lines are charges. A pending hold that later vanishes is not a credit adjustment either. That is a temp authorization.

If you do not know why the credit is there, call the number on the statement and ask which merchant or which rewards redemption it was. Have the date and the amount. A credit you did not expect is still your money to understand. It is not a bill.
