What POS PUR and POS PURCHASE mean on a statement
POS PUR and POS PURCHASE are labels for a debit card purchase. They are not a monthly fee. CHECKCARD and the words POS DEBIT are already explained on [what CHECKCARD and POS DEBIT mean](/guides/checkcard-charge). This page is the shorter POS PUR label, the cash back version, and the return.

What the code list prints
FIS publishes a list of ATM and point of sale transaction codes used by banks that run on that system. The list opened 19 October 2026 prints code 7250 as a debit, short description POS PUR, statement description POS PURCHASE, comment Pinned. Code 7260 is also POS PUR and POS PURCHASE, with the comment No Pin. Codes next to those add Regional, Foreign, or International in the comment. Your statement may show only POS PUR or only POS PURCHASE. The merchant name is the rest of the line.
Pinned means the PIN was used. No Pin means it was not. That difference can matter if you are matching a receipt, because a PIN purchase and a signature or tap purchase can post on different days. The timing Bank of America describes for PIN and no PIN debits stays on the CHECKCARD page. Do not treat this code list as every bank's wording. A bank can shorten the line.
Cash back and a return
Code 7270 on the same list is a debit, short description POS PUR, statement description POS PURCHASE CASH BACK. The line can include the purchase and the cash you took at the register. The total is not always the receipt for the goods alone. Compare it with the receipt before you call it a fee.
Code 2270 is a credit, short description POS RETURN, statement description POS PURCHASE RETURN. That is money coming back from a point of sale purchase, not a new charge. A different bank may print a shorter credit description. Credits that use other words are on what a credit adjustment means. A pending card purchase that has not posted yet is on what PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON means.
How to match the store
Read the words after POS PUR or POS PURCHASE. That is the merchant, a city, or a phone number. Search email for the amount. A return should be close to the original amount, but it can be smaller if you did not return everything. An Interac purchase at a Canadian store uses different words, on what an Interac purchase means.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank or the card company, and it does not cancel a card or a purchase.
Questions
- Is POS PUR a fee?
- No. In the FIS list it is the short description for a point of sale purchase. The fee, if the bank charged one, is a different line.
- What is the difference between Pinned and No Pin?
- The FIS list marks code 7250 as Pinned and code 7260 as No Pin. Both can print as POS PURCHASE. The comment says whether a PIN was part of that code.
- What does POS PURCHASE RETURN mean?
- The FIS list prints it as a credit. It is a point of sale purchase coming back, not a second purchase.
