The $14 fee
Opened 21 October 2026. The dollar is on the Golden 1 consumer services fee schedule, effective 1 July 2026, and on the Standard Courtesy Pay notice. Courtesy Pay is $14.00 per item when Golden 1 pays an overdraft caused by a check or an ACH item. Everyday debit card transactions are included only if you opted in.
The same notice says there is a maximum of four Courtesy Pay fees per day. Fees are waived on a transaction that uses $5.00 or less of Courtesy Pay. The fee schedule lists Insufficient Funds as free when a check or ACH item is declined or returned without payment. Paying an overdraft is at Golden 1's discretion. The notice lists 1-877-465-3361.

How to avoid it
A returned item is not where this $14 comes from. The schedule says that return is free. The $14 is for an overdraft Golden 1 pays. The notice skips the fee when the transaction uses $5.00 or less of Courtesy Pay, and it stops at four fees in a day.
You can opt out of Standard Courtesy Pay on the opt-out page. Opting out also removes everyday debit card coverage if you had opted in. A linked savings account or line of credit is a separate option the notice says may cost less. The fee schedule is a different document from a monthly fee: Free Checking, New Generation Checking, Freedom Checking, Student Checking, and Easy Checking are listed as free, and Premium Checking is $8.00 a month if the $500 minimum daily balance is not kept.
