Why was I charged multiple overdraft fees in one day?

Several overdraft fees on the same day usually means several items cleared while the account was short. The bank can charge once for each item it pays, until it hits the daily cap printed on its own fee page. A cap of 3 is three fees, not one fee. Some banks print no overdraft fee at all.

Why several fees can hit on the same day

Opened 19 October 2026. An overdraft fee is what the bank charges when it pays a payment and the account does not have enough money. A returned item, or an NSF fee (not enough money), is the charge when the bank sends the payment back instead. Those are different lines. If a card purchase, a cheque, and a bill payment all clear while the balance is already negative, each one can be its own fee.

The order the bank uses can change the count. If a deposit posts after the payments, more items can hit a negative balance. If the deposit posts first, some of those payments may clear with no fee. Chase says Total Checking fees are charged during nightly processing, beginning with the first transaction that overdraws the account by more than $50. Wells Fargo says Everyday Checking adds deposits first, then subtracts withdrawals it already authorized, then cheques and preauthorized payments. TD Bank in the US says the order transactions are processed may affect the total amount of overdraft fees. A different bank can use a different order. Read the account you have.

A daily cap is the most overdraft fees that bank says it will charge in one day. The cap is a count of fees, not a promise that the first fee is the only one. Chase Total Checking prints a maximum of 3 fees a business day. Bank of America prints not more than 2 Overdraft Item Fees a day on the accounts that charge one. PNC Virtual Wallet prints a maximum of 1 overdraft fee a day. The dollar for each fee is in the table below. The full fee each bank prints, including the small-balance exceptions, is on US overdraft fees by bank.

Daily caps at major US banks

Match the account name. A second account at the same bank can be a different row. If a page does not charge this fee, the daily cap is none.

Opened 19 October 2026. Amounts are US dollars, as printed on each bank's page.

A short note on the big five in Canada

RBC, TD Canada Trust, Scotiabank, BMO, and CIBC do not use the US per-item overdraft fee in the table above. On a personal deposit account, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says a federally regulated bank cannot charge more than $10 in NSF fees, cannot charge an NSF fee more than once in 2 business days on the same account, and cannot charge an NSF fee when the overdraft is less than $10. That limit does not apply to a business account. Overdraft protection, if you signed up for it, is a separate fee. The dollars below are Canadian dollars.

Opened 19 October 2026. These are overdraft protection fees, not the US overdraft item fee.
BankWhat the official page prints for the same day
RBCOverdraft protection is $5.00 a month plus interest. Overdraft item handling is $5.00 each when RBC pays an item. That line does not print a one-per-day cap. If you or a co-owner lives in Quebec, the account is not charged the $5.00 fee for going past the overdraft protection limit. NSF is $10.00, and RBC says that from 6 March 2026 it will not charge an NSF fee more than once in two business days on the same account.
TD Canada TrustPay As You Go is $5 per use, and the page says the most you will pay in one day is $5, plus 21% interest a year on the overdrawn amount. That plan is not available in Quebec. The monthly plan is printed as $5 a month no matter how often you are overdrawn, and the same page says fees vary for different TD chequing accounts.
ScotiabankPay-per-use is $5.00 every time an overdraft is created or increased. The Day-to-Day Banking Companion Booklet says that fee will not be charged more than once per day. It is not available in Quebec. The monthly plan is $5.00 no matter how many overdrafts, as long as you stay inside the limit. The booklet also prints $5.00 for each payment while the account is overdrawn past the pre-authorized limit.
BMOOccasional Overdraft Protection is $5 for each business day you create or increase the overdraft. It is not available in Quebec. Standard Overdraft Protection is $5 a month. The terms also name an overdraft per item charge when an item is paid past the limit. The page opened on 19 October 2026 does not print a dollar for that extra charge.
CIBCPay per use is $5.00 for each business day, based on the balance at the end of the day, when an overdraft is created or increased. It is not available in Quebec. The monthly fixed fee is $5.00. If you do not have the service and CIBC pays a debit that overdraws the account, the page calls that a $5.00 Casual Overdraft fee, also based on the balance at the end of the day.

How to spot the repeated fees

On the statement, the payment and the fee are different lines. Look for several lines on the same date with words such as overdraft, overdraft item, NSF, or returned item. Write the date, the printed name, the amount, and the payment next to each fee. Count the fees for that day. Then compare the count with the cap for your account in the table. A fourth Chase Total Checking fee on one business day is past the cap of 3. Three Chase fees of $34 are inside the cap the page prints, and they can still be a refund request.

A fee for the account staying negative after those items post is a different question, on fees while an account stays overdrawn. A fee from the store, after the bank returned a payment, is not your bank's line. Ask the store about that one. How to find bank fees on a US statement shows the words US banks print. The Canadian NSF dollars are on Canada NSF fees by bank.

How to ask about the extra fees

Use the phone number on the statement. Have the date, each fee name, each amount, and the cap from the bank's own page. Ask which items the bank paid, and ask it to review the fees or remove the ones past the cap. Asking is a request. The bank can say no. This page has no success rate. A short example of what to say is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee. The overdraft version, including the US rule for debit card and ATM opt in, is on how to ask your bank to waive an overdraft fee.

Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists every fee line it finds. It does not sign in to the bank, and the list is not a promise the bank will refund a fee.

How to make the next day cheaper

Turn on the low balance alert in the bank's app if it offers one. U.S. Bank and TD Bank in the US both tell you to set alerts so you hear about a low or overdrawn balance. An alert does not move money by itself.

For a one time debit card purchase and an ATM withdrawal, a US bank generally needs you to opt in before it can charge an overdraft fee. If you are enrolled, you can tell the bank to stop that coverage. That can stop future fees on the payments the rule covers. It does not remove a fee already on the statement, and it does not promise the next payment will go through. Cheques and repeating electronic payments can still be charged. The steps are on how to ask about an overdraft fee.

Linking a savings account can cover the shortfall before an overdraft fee. Some banks charge for that transfer and some do not. The US transfer fees that were opened are on overdraft protection transfer fees. Capital One 360 Checking prints a free transfer from savings. PNC Virtual Wallet prints no charge for a transfer from Reserve or Growth. Read your own account before you assume the transfer is free.

Questions

Can a bank charge overdraft fees more than once a day?
Yes, when its own page says so. On 19 October 2026, Chase Total Checking printed a maximum of 3 fees a business day, Bank of America printed not more than 2 Overdraft Item Fees a day, Wells Fargo Everyday Checking and U.S. Bank Smartly Checking printed 3 a day, TD Bank checking in the US printed 3 a day, and PNC Virtual Wallet printed 1 a day. Citi's everyday tiers, Capital One 360 Checking, and Truist One Checking printed no overdraft fee.
Why was I charged three overdraft fees in one day?
Each item the bank pays while the balance is negative can be its own fee, until the daily cap. Three fees of $34 match the Chase Total Checking line: $34 per transaction, and at most 3 fees a business day, up to $102. Match the account name before you treat another bank's $34 line the same way.
Does a daily cap mean the bank can charge only one fee?
No. The cap is the most fees that page allows in one day. A cap of 3 means the bank may charge three times. A cap of 1, which PNC Virtual Wallet prints, means one overdraft fee that day.
Do Canadian banks charge a US-style fee on every item the same day?
Not in the same way. The big five print an overdraft protection fee, often $5 a month or $5 for the day you use it. RBC's overdraft item handling line is $5.00 each and does not print a one-per-day cap. An NSF fee on a personal deposit account at a federally regulated bank is limited to $10 and to once in 2 business days.
