The $32 fee
Opened 21 October 2026. The figures are from Associated Bank's overdraft protection service page. The fee table prints a non-sufficient funds (NSF) returned item fee of $0. The overdraft fee for personal or business checking accounts is $32 per item, with a maximum of two per day. A commercial analyzed account is a different row on the same table: $40 per item, with a maximum of four per day, and the grace zone column says N/A.
The page says an overdraft is when the bank pays a transaction the account cannot cover, and you are charged a fee for each one, up to two a day. A return is when the bank does not pay it. You are not charged a returned item fee, and the transaction is marked as an NSF returned item. Debit and ATM overdraft service is optional. The page says the bank pays most overdrafts when that service is on, and it does not guarantee every transaction. The phone on the opt-in answers is 800-236-8866.

Grace zone and a free transfer
The same page says most checking accounts have an overdraft grace zone of up to $50. Platinum Choice Checking is up to $100. The disclosure footnote is more specific: no overdraft fee if the account is overdrawn by $50 or less on most personal checking accounts, by $100 or less for Platinum Choice, or by $250 or less for Emerald Choice. Emerald Private Choice has no overdraft fees. If the bank pays the overdraft, a deposit still has to bring the account back to a positive balance.
Overdraft Protection Transfer links the checking account to another Associated Bank account: another checking account, savings, a money market, a consumer credit card, a Checking Reserve line of credit, or a Premier line of credit. The footnote says there is no fee for that service. It points to the deposit agreement for transaction limits. That transfer is not the $32 item fee. A commercial analyzed account does not use the personal grace zone.
