What a PayPal* charge means on your statement

PayPal can put the seller's name on the card statement after the word PayPal. A bank transfer does not show that name. It shows PAYPALINST XFER.

Why the line looks like that

PayPal's page about the credit card statement name says the business name can appear after PayPal *. The example PayPal prints is PayPal *SELLER NAME. PayPal tells businesses not to use the characters &, #, or parentheses in that name, so the text can look shorter than the shop's logo.

That name is only the card statement name. PayPal says changing it does not change the legal name of the business. If you paid by bank transfer, PayPal says the business name will not appear. The line is PAYPALINST XFER. To see who it was, sign in to PayPal and look at History.

The phone number on the line

PayPal says a purchase may show as PayPal along with 402-935-7733. That number is a PayPal customer service phone number. You can also see it when the shop uses PayPal as the card processor. PayPal says to check your statement against recent PayPal activity.

If you do not have a PayPal account, or you have not used it recently, PayPal says to follow its steps to report an unauthorized transaction.

How to work out the purchase

Start with the words after PayPal *. That is the statement name the business chose. Then open PayPal History and match the date and the amount. A bank transfer will not have the seller name on the bank line, so History is the place PayPal names for that payment.

PayPal's US pages do not print a different statement name for Canada. A GOOGLE* charge that mentions PayPal can be a Play purchase paid with PayPal. Google says it can act on a PayPal Play charge within 120 days.

Upload the statement to Expenvo and it lists every subscription it finds. The PayPal line still has to be matched in PayPal if the seller name is missing. Expenvo does not cancel the payment for you.
