What a Global Payments charge means
A Global Payments charge is a card payment. Global Payments lets the business send an alternative doing-business-as name, called the charge description, so the bank statement shows that name in capitals.

What the line is
Opened 20 October 2026. Global Payments' dynamic descriptor page says the merchant can pass an alternative doing-business-as name in the charge description field so that it appears on the customer's bank statement. The example is a legal merchant name that is different from the website name: the descriptor can be the website name. Text passed through appears in all capitals. The field is optional and holds 25 characters. Allowed characters are letters, digits, spaces, a slash, a hyphen, and French accented letters.
If no descriptor is sent, Global Payments says it uses the Global Payments merchant name on the account. That name is set when the account is created or updated. The page says this feature is currently supported by the acquirers Global Payments North America and Allied Irish Banks, and that both the issuer and the acquirer must support it. A line that does not change is the account name, not a failed charge.
Heartland's Portico guide, in the same Global Payments developer family, describes the star form used when a short doing-business-as name is configured. The short name can be 3, 7, or 12 characters, then a star, then the transaction text. Portico's table says a format of 3 leaves up to 18 characters after the star, a format of 7 leaves up to 14, and a format of 12 leaves up to 9. The whole dynamic merchant name, including the short name and the star, is at most 22 characters for Mastercard and 25 for Visa and Discover. Merchants on the Exchange host are limited to 22 for every card brand. Portico says that without a dynamic descriptor, the merchant name on file is what the cardholder statement shows.
How to match it to a purchase
Read the line in capitals as a website or a shop, not as a code. Search that name and the amount. A hyphen or a slash in the middle can be part of the name. Global Payments allows both.
The North America note on the Global Payments page means a US or Canadian acquirer can be in scope. Allied Irish Banks is a separate acquirer on that same page. The page does not print a country prefix. Use the name on your statement.
A refund can carry a descriptor too. Global Payments says you can set the description on an authorization, a capture, or a refund. A credit with the same capitals can be money coming back, not a second purchase. Compare the sign on the amount.
If you do not recognize it
If the date and the amount do not match a receipt, an email, or a purchase someone on the card made, it may be a charge you did not allow. In the United States, use dispute a charge in the US. In Canada, use dispute a charge in Canada. A name you still cannot place is on unknown charge on a statement. The code list is on statement codes.
Elavon's 25 character doing-business-as field is on what an Elavon charge means. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge.
Questions
- Does Global Payments print a fixed prefix?
- The dynamic descriptor page does not print one. It says the charge description is up to 25 characters, shown in all capitals. If none is sent, the merchant name on the account is used.
- What does the star mean?
- Heartland's Portico guide says a configured short name of 3, 7, or 12 characters is separated from the rest of the line by a star. The length after the star is 18, 14, or 9 characters for those three formats.
- Why is the whole line in capitals?
- Global Payments says text passed through the charge description appears in all capitals on the customer's bank statement.
- Who do I dispute it with?
- Match the name and the amount first. A credit with the same name can be a refund. If nobody allowed a debit, dispute it with the card issuer.
