Unknown charge on my statement: how to find who it is

The name on a statement is often shorter than the store you remember. A city, a processor, or a parent company can sit in front of the brand. Match the date and the amount before you call it fraud. If you still cannot place it, ask the merchant line on the statement, then the bank.

Read the short name

Write the date, the exact description, and the amount. Search your email for that amount and that date. A receipt often uses the brand name, while the statement uses a short code. Guides on this site cover names such as APPLE.COM/BILL, AMZN Mktp, GOOGLE*, and PayPal*.

A family member, a saved card in an app, or a free trial that renewed can be a charge you did not expect and still authorized. That is different from a charge nobody allowed.

Expenvo flags possible duplicate charges and lists subscriptions from a statement PDF in the app, and it does not dispute the charge.

If you still do not know the merchant

Call the phone number printed next to the charge, if there is one. Ask which store or website billed that amount on that date. Then check that company's order history.

If nobody you allowed made the purchase, use the dispute steps in charged twice for the same thing. In the US, the CFPB's billing-error clock for a credit card is a written notice within 60 days after the statement that first showed the charge. In Canada, FCAC says the maximum liability on a bank-issued credit card is $50 unless there was gross negligence, and to report without delay. Do not wait for a guessed number of days that no page printed.

Questions

Why does the statement name not match the store?
Card networks often show a short merchant name, a city, or a payment processor. The receipt in your email is the place to match the amount and the date.
Is every unknown charge fraud?
No. It can be a subscription, a family member, or a processor name for a store you used. Match the date and amount first.
Who do I call first?
Use the phone number printed with the charge, if the statement has one. If you still do not recognize it, call the number on the statement and ask the bank or card issuer.
Does Expenvo identify every merchant?
No. Expenvo reads the statement, flags possible duplicates, and lists subscriptions. It does not dispute the charge, and a short name can still need you to match it.
