What WPY* means on your statement

WPY* is a prefix WePay tells platforms to expect on a payer's statement. The words after it are the merchant's statement description. WePay's own pages, opened 17 October 2026, also say a charge to a Canada based merchant is shown without that prefix.

The letters WePay prints

WePay's card network rules page tells a platform what to put on a receipt so the payer is less likely to dispute the charge. For merchants in the US and the UK, the recommended sentence is that the charge will appear on the credit card statement as WPY* plus the description. For merchants in Canada, the recommended sentence uses the description alone, without WPY*. The example on that page is a merchant named Joe's fundraiser. In the US and the UK the receipt should say WPY*Joe's fundraiser. In Canada it should say Joe's fundraiser.

The same page also says the receipt should explain how the charge will appear, such as wpy*MerchantName, and that merchants should use a merchant name their customers will recognize. A second WePay page, Card Network Rules Certification, repeats the split: Canada is the description alone, and the US is WPY* plus the description. That page uses statement_description as the text you insert. Its example is also Joe's fundraiser.

WePay's checkout API describes soft_descriptor as the payment description that will show up on the payer's credit card statement, up to 255 characters, set from the account name. One example response on that page shows the soft descriptor WPY*Wolverine. Currencies on that checkout page include USD and CAD. A long name in the API can still be cut down by the bank. Read the start of the line.

The full list of these short names is on statement codes. PayPal on a statement is a different company and a different prefix.

Why the name is cut off

WePay's onboard merchants page says statement_description is what shows on the payer's card or bank statement. It says receiving banks will typically display 14 to 20 characters, so the useful text should be in the first 14. The example value on that page is Foo Shop. If your line is a short fragment, it can still be that description, trimmed by the bank.

The same page says pending payments, including authorization requests, appear on card statements as WPY* plus the statement description. It also says that for American Express the line may show WePay instead of the description if the merchant has not completed KYC. So one person can see WPY* and a shop name, and another person, on American Express, can see only WePay while a check is unfinished.

Match the amount and the date to email from the fundraiser, the marketplace, or the club that used WePay. The platform's receipt is supposed to warn you about the statement text before you pay. Search for WPY and for the shop name in that mail.

If you do not recognize it

Confirm whether the merchant is in Canada or in the US. A Canadian charge can be the shop name with no WPY* in front of it. A US charge is more likely to start with WPY*. The country of the merchant is WePay's rule for the receipt text. Your bank can still shorten either version.

If you paid a shop and the line is WPY* plus a piece of its name, the charge is that shop, processed by WePay. A renewal you want to stop has to be canceled with the shop. How to cancel a subscription is the general page. If nobody allowed the payment, use dispute a charge in the US or dispute a charge in Canada.

Questions

Does every WePay charge start with WPY*?
WePay's card network rules say US and UK charges should be described as WPY* plus the description. Canada should be described as the description alone, without WPY*.
Why is the shop name only a few letters?
WePay says receiving banks typically display 14 to 20 characters, and that the useful text should be in the first 14.
Can the line say only WePay?
WePay says pending payments show as WPY* plus the statement description, but American Express may show WePay instead of the description if the merchant has not completed KYC.
Does Expenvo know the fundraiser?
No. It lists the description from your statement. You match WPY* and the words after it to the receipt.
