How to identify an unknown invoice charge

By Karla CastroUpdated October 30, 2026

An unknown invoice charge is a line you do not recognize, often with a short company name, a city, or a number. Match the date and the amount to a receipt or an invoice before you call it fraud. A store purchase with no invoice is on unknown charge on a statement.

Write down the line exactly

Copy the date, the printed name, and the amount. Keep any extra text, including INV, invoice, a phone number, or a city. Search email for that amount and that date. A receipt often uses the brand. The statement often uses a shorter name.

If the line names a processor, the store can sit behind it. Codes such as SP * and PayPal are on statement codes and PayPal on a statement. A repeating name is a different job, on how to find subscriptions from a statement.

Ask the biller, then the bank

Call the phone number printed next to the charge, if there is one. Ask which company billed that amount on that date, and ask for the invoice number. Then open that company's account or the invoice they email.

If nobody you allowed made the purchase, use the dispute steps for your card. In the United States, start with how to dispute a charge. In Canada, start with how to dispute a charge in Canada. A second copy of the same invoice is on how to refund a duplicate invoice charge. A charge that keeps coming is on how to stop a recurring invoice charge.

Questions

Is every unknown invoice charge fraud?
No. A short merchant name, a saved card, or a renewal you forgot can look unknown and still be a charge you allowed. Match the date and the amount first.
What if the statement has no phone number?
Search the printed name and the amount in your email. If you still cannot place it, ask the bank or card company which merchant name they have for that line.
Will Expenvo name the company for me?
Expenvo lists the line as printed and can group repeating names. It does not call the merchant, and it does not decide that a charge is fraud.
