How to refund a duplicate invoice charge

By Karla CastroUpdated October 30, 2026

A duplicate invoice charge is two posted lines for one bill. A pending line and a posted line for the same purchase can look like two charges and still be one. Match the invoice numbers before you ask for money back. Two posts for one store purchase are on charged twice.

Confirm it is the same invoice

Write both dates, both amounts, and both printed names. If the invoice numbers differ, they may be two bills. If one line is still pending, wait until it posts or drops. Pending and posted charges is that difference.

A refund the company already sent can show as a credit, not as the original line disappearing. A credit is money back. It is not a new expense.

Ask the biller for the refund

Start with the company on the invoice. Give them both dates and both amounts, and ask them to refund the extra charge. Keep the reply. If they agree, the credit can take more than one statement cycle to show.

If the company will not help, or you did not allow either charge, ask the bank or card company. United States card steps are on how to dispute a charge. Canadian steps are on how to dispute a charge in Canada. A bank fee refund is a different request, on how to ask your bank to refund a fee. Asking is a request. They can say no.

If the same invoice is set to bill again next month, stopping it is on how to stop a recurring invoice charge. Naming the line in the first place is on how to identify an unknown invoice charge.

Questions

Should I dispute before I ask the company?
Ask the company first when you can see the invoice. A dispute is the next step if they will not refund a real duplicate, or if you did not allow the charge.
Does a pending duplicate mean I was billed twice?
Not always. A pending line can drop when the purchase posts. Compare the two lines after both have posted, or after the pending line disappears.
Does Expenvo send the refund request?
No. Expenvo lists the lines on the PDF. You ask the biller or the bank. Expenvo does not call them.
