How to ask about an Amex Platinum annual fee in the US and Canada
The Platinum annual fee is a charge for keeping the card. It is not a store purchase. American Express prints a different fee in the United States and in Canada. A retention offer and a downgrade menu are not on the pages opened for this guide. Asking is a request. They can say no.

The fee each country prints
On the US Platinum card page, opened 19 October 2026, the annual fee for a Basic Card is $895. An Additional Platinum Card is $195. A Companion Platinum Card has no annual fee. The US terms page opened the same day prints the same $895, foreign transaction fee of None, a late payment fee of up to $40, and a returned payment fee of up to $40. Those penalty lines are not the annual fee. The terms page says variable APRs are accurate as of 20 May 2026, so the interest numbers can move. This guide does not copy them.
American Express said in its 18 September 2025 newsroom article that the new annual fee for the US Consumer Platinum Card and the US Business Platinum Card is $895. Card Members who opened accounts before 18 September 2025 get that new fee at the next renewal on or after 2 January 2026 for the consumer card, or on or after 2 December 2025 for the business card. If your statement still shows an older fee, compare the renewal date on the statement with those dates before you assume the $895 already applies.
The Canada Platinum page, opened the same day, prints an annual fee of $799. An Additional Platinum Card is $250. The first two Additional Gold Cards are $0, and any further Additional Gold Card is $50. The same page says purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars and a 2.5% foreign currency conversion commission applies. That commission is not the annual fee. The Canada page does not print a refund window for closing the card. Do not copy the US 30 day sentence onto a Canadian account.
When the US fee can come back
The US Platinum Card member agreement dated 18 September 2025 says American Express will refund the annual fee if you notify them that you are voluntarily closing the account within 30 days after the closing date of the billing statement on which that fee appears. After that period the annual fee is not refunded. If your billing address is in Massachusetts when you close, that policy does not apply to you. If the account is cancelled and they reopen it at your request, they may charge a $25 fee. Close by calling or writing. The older agreement file is already discussed on annual fee refund when you cancel. Read the agreement for the card in your hand, because a different American Express card can use different words.
The US upgrade terms URL that used to describe a prorated fee did not open on 19 October 2026. This guide does not print an upgrade proration rule. If you moved up from another card, ask American Express what they charged and what they credited, with the statement in front of you.
Retention and a cheaper card
The US card page, the US terms page, the 18 September 2025 agreement, and the Canada card page do not print a retention offer, a list of offers, or a downgrade menu. There is no published dollar for a fee waiver after the first year. Call the number on the statement. Have the date the fee posted, the amount, and the card name. Ask them to review the fee. Ask whether a different American Express card is available on the account and what that card's own annual fee would be. They can say no. A product change, if they offer one, is a new fee schedule, not a promise that this year's fee disappears.
The general questions are on how to ask about a card annual fee. The PDF steps are on how to download an American Express statement. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank or the card company, and it does not cancel a card or a purchase.
