How to waive a Desjardins monthly fee

What this fee is

A monthly plan fee is the charge for the transaction plan on an everyday account. Desjardins says an everyday account and a chequing account are the same kind of account. Extra transactions past the plan are a different charge. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps the plan fee and the extra lines apart.

The fees Desjardins prints

These amounts are in Canadian dollars. The everyday account page and the service fees PDF list the same four plans.

Basic is $3.95 a month, with 12 transactions, or $0 if the balance stays at least $1,500 for the entire month. Intermediate is $10.95 a month, with 30 transactions, or $0 with at least $3,000 for the entire month. Unlimited is $15.95 a month, with unlimited transactions, or $0 with at least $4,000 for the entire month. Unlimited Plus is $23.95 a month, with unlimited transactions, or $0 with at least $5,000 for the entire month.

Desjardins says that balance has to be maintained for the entire month. One day below it means the plan fee on that page applies. The service fees PDF lists $1.25 for many transactions that are not covered once you pass the plan, including a direct payment, a cheque, and a pre-authorized payment. Those lines are not the monthly plan fee.

What to ask

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. The service fees PDF lists 1-888-556-7212. If the statement shows a different number, use the statement. Ask which plan is on the account, and whether the balance fell below the listed amount on any day. Then ask Desjardins to review the fee or remove it. They can say no.
