How to waive a National Bank monthly fee

You get the monthly fees National Bank prints for three named packages, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions. Asking National Bank to remove a fee already charged is a request. The bank can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

A monthly account fee is a charge for the package itself. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. An extra transaction fee is a different line. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps those lines apart.

Match the package name on the statement. The figures below are in Canadian dollars. Your account agreement controls the fee, not this page.

The fees National Bank prints

The Fee Guide for Personal Banking Solutions lists fixed monthly fees of $3.95 for The Minimalist, $15.95 for The Connected, and $28.95 for The Total. The Minimalist column includes 18 electronic transactions and does not list a minimum balance that removes the fee. The Connected and The Total include unlimited electronic transactions. The guide lists a minimum daily balance of $4,500 for The Connected and $6,000 for The Total to be exempt from the fixed monthly fee.

The Minimalist chequing page lists $0 a month for ages 0 to 17 and for ages 18 to 24, and $3.95 a month for ages 25 to 59 and for 60 plus. The same page lists no monthly fee for people 65 and over who receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement, for RDSP beneficiaries 18 and over, and for Indigenous peoples. It also says newcomers can have the first year with no fixed monthly fees. National Bank says proof of eligibility may be requested. A $0 line on that page is a published rule for people who qualify. It is not a statement that the bank will remove a fee already charged.

The same Minimalist page says The Connected can include a $5 a month discount with an eligible Mastercard, and The Total a $10 a month discount. Those discounts have their own conditions on the page. Read them before you subtract them from the fee guide amounts.

What to ask

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. National Bank's Minimalist page lists 1-888-835-6281. If that number and the statement disagree, use the statement. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask which package is on the account, and whether one day below the listed balance caused this month's fee. Then ask the bank to review the fee or remove it. They can say no.

Questions

Is every National Bank chequing account $3.95 a month?
No. The fee guide lists $3.95 for The Minimalist, $15.95 for The Connected, and $28.95 for The Total. Age and other published rules can change The Minimalist fee. Match the package name on your statement.
Will National Bank remove a monthly fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says the bank has to remove a fee already on the statement.
Can Expenvo tell me the fee will be $0 next month?
No. Expenvo can list a fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether you will meet the bank's rule in the next period.
Should I multiply $3.95 by 12?
Only if that same monthly fee is on the statement every month. $3.95 times 12 is $47.40. That result is arithmetic. It is not money the bank has agreed to return.
