How to get a BMO NSF fee refunded
BMO's everyday banking booklet, effective 2 June 2026, prints C$10.00 for an item returned for non-sufficient funds on a Canadian dollar account, and US$5.00 on a U.S. dollar account. The footnote limits that to one fee in two business days and skips it when the unauthorized overdraft would be less than $10.00. Asking BMO to reverse a fee outside that footnote is a request.

The C$10.00 fee
Opened 20 October 2026. The booklet says the NSF change applies to Everyday Bank Accounts. A fee applies when a cheque or pre-authorized debit is returned for non-sufficient funds. For a pre-authorized debit, a separate fee can be charged for the original presentment and for a representment if it is returned again. Canadian dollar accounts are C$10.00. U.S. dollar accounts are US$5.00. The row that compares banks is Overdraft and NSF fees by bank (2026). The monthly plan is on how to waive a BMO monthly fee.
No fee is charged if the returned cheque or pre-authorized debit would have caused an unauthorized overdraft of less than $10.00. If more than one item is returned on the same account on the same business day, only one fee is charged. A fee will not be charged more than once within two business days on the same account.

Overdraft Protection and the per item charge
Standard Overdraft Protection is $5.00 a month. The booklet says this fee does not apply to residents of Quebec. Occasional Overdraft Protection is $5.00 and is not available for residents of Quebec. The Overdraft Per Item Charge is $5.00 when an item is paid and creates or increases an overdraft and you do not have the protection, or when it exceeds the limit. That charge does not apply to residents of Quebec. The occasional fee and the per item charge are described per business day.
The booklet does not print the interest percent. It says the current rate is at BMO branches in Canada or by calling 1-877-225-5266. These charges are not described as an automatic refund of an NSF fee.
A short script
Use the number on the statement, or 1-877-225-5266 if you are asking about the rate the booklet points to. "Hello. I am calling about one NSF fee. The date is [date]. The amount is C$10.00. Please tell me whether another NSF fee was already charged on this account within two business days, whether more than one item was returned the same business day, or whether the unauthorized overdraft would have been less than $10.00. If none of those apply, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."
Use US$5.00 if that is the account. Then wait. A yes should include the day the credit posts. A no can be followed by the complaint steps. How to ask your bank to refund a fee covers the timing.
What the footnote does not promise
One fee in two business days is a limit on charging, not a courtesy refund after the fact. The booklet opened today does not say that depositing the next day removes an NSF fee that already posted. What a Canadian NSF fee is explains the federal description. BMO can still say the fee stands.
