How to track spending, fees and subscriptions without linking your bank
Rocket Money, Monarch Money, and Copilot Money are built around connecting your bank through an aggregator. Rocket Money's own article says that connection uses Plaid. If you would rather not, you still have options. Expenvo is a Rocket Money alternative without Plaid: you upload a statement PDF, and Expenvo does not ask for a bank login.

Options that skip a bank login
The table is the short version. The notes under it are the lines each company's public page actually prints. Competitor details come from their public sites, checked October 22, 2026.
| Approach | Example | What you do | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload a PDF statement | Expenvo | Download the PDF and upload it in the browser | Finding fees, subscriptions, and unknown charges each month |
| Manual entry | Bobby (iPhone) | Type in each subscription | A short list you already know |
| File import | YNAB, Monarch Money | Export a file and import it. Both support manual entry and file import. | Full budgeting, with upkeep |
| Spreadsheet | Any spreadsheet | Copy the transactions yourself | Full control, and the most effort |
What those pages say
Bobby's App Store listing says the app is only for iPhone, and that you add a subscription and enter the contract details. This page does not quote a price for Bobby. The App Store listing is the place to check that.
YNAB's pricing page says direct import supports select banks, and that file based import is available when direct import does not. Monarch's help pages say you can add a manual account and import transactions from a CSV. Monarch's pricing page describes syncing account data and does not name the data partner, so this page does not name one either.
Copilot's help article says most institutions connect through Plaid. Side by side pages for the products Expenvo is often compared with are Expenvo vs Rocket Money, Expenvo vs YNAB, and Expenvo vs Monarch.
Why some people skip linking
A linked account gives a third party ongoing access. Uploading one PDF does not. You can stop by not uploading the next file.
A bank connection does not always stay up. When the connection fails, the app is waiting on the bank. A PDF you already downloaded is not.
A monthly check is a different job from a live feed. If you only want the fees and subscriptions on the statement you just downloaded, a link is more access than the job needs.
How Expenvo works
1) Download the statement PDF. Steps for named banks are on how to download your bank statement.
2) Upload it in the browser. There is no bank login and no linking. The PDF stays on your device.
3) See bank fees, subscriptions, and unfamiliar charges. The same walkthrough is on bank statement analyzer.
Free is one statement a month. A free account keeps the 3 largest fees and the 3 largest subscriptions. The first statement, with no account, lists every fee and every subscription on that file. Pro is unlimited statements and every fee. Pro is $5.99 USD a month or $47 USD a year. In Canada, Pro is C$7.99 CAD a month or C$64 CAD a year. Pricing shows the price for your country. Sales tax may be added at checkout.
The tradeoff
Nothing updates automatically. A charge that posts tomorrow is not on today's PDF. You upload the next statement when you want a new check. Repeating names on one month are on how to find subscriptions on a credit card statement. Two posted lines for one purchase are on charged twice.
For alerts as charges post, the sister app Expense Canary is the better fit. It is on iOS and Android.
Check your statement without linking your bank. Upload one free.
Questions
- Is there a budgeting app that does not connect to my bank?
- Yes. YNAB and Monarch Money support manual entry and file import. Bobby on iPhone is manual: you type each subscription. Expenvo reads a PDF statement and does not ask for a bank login. A spreadsheet is the same idea with more typing.
- Is uploading a statement safer than linking?
- Uploading gives the product one document you choose, not ongoing access to the account. Linking gives an aggregator a connection that stays on. Which one you use is a comfort decision. This page does not rank them as more or less safe in the abstract.
- Can I find forgotten subscriptions without linking?
- Yes. Download the PDF statements and look for the same merchant name across months. The steps are on how to find all your subscriptions from a bank statement. Expenvo lists the repeating charges on the file you upload. It does not tell you to cancel them.
