What a card replacement fee is

A card replacement fee is what the bank or card company charges to send a new card when the old one is lost, stolen, damaged, or expired. Debit, credit, and prepaid cards can each have their own rule. The pages opened 17 October 2026 do not print one dollar that every US or Canadian bank charges. The amount, if there is one, is on your fee schedule or your card agreement.

What the line means

The new card is not the same line as a purchase you did not make. Replacement is a fee from the issuer. Fraud is a transaction from a merchant. If both happened, write them down separately. The fee may say card replacement, lost card, rush card, or plastic fee. A rush delivery can be an extra line on top of the replacement. Do not add those together and call the total the replacement fee unless the agreement says they are one charge.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's prepaid card page, last reviewed 31 October 2024, says a prepaid provider may charge a fee to replace a card that is lost, stolen, damaged, or expired. Packaging in a store has to include a chart of key fees, and it has to point to a website with the longer list. That page does not print a dollar. It also says you can usually cancel a prepaid card without a fee, but there may be a fee to get a check for the leftover balance. An extra card for an authorized user can be its own fee. Those are prepaid rules. A bank debit card or a credit card uses the agreement for that account.

A checking account that is advertised as free has limits on which fees it can charge. The CFPB says a free or no cost account cannot have a monthly service fee, a fee for going past a transaction count, a fee to deposit, withdraw, or transfer, or a fee for missing a minimum balance. It can still have ATM fees, overdraft fees, bounced check fees, balance inquiry fees, stop payment fees, dormant account fees, or check printing fees. Card replacement is not in that free account list. Do not assume a free checking account is barred from a replacement fee unless your agreement says the fee is $0 or is not charged. Silence is not a promise of $0.

Debit and credit, in the US and in Canada

On a US debit card, the fee schedule for the checking account is the document that lists a replacement, a rush order, or a design fee. On a US credit card, look at the cardmember agreement and the later fee table, not at a blog. If the agreement says none, or that a replacement is not charged, you can quote that sentence back to the issuer. If the agreement is silent, call the number on the back of the card and ask them to point to the line. This guide does not fill the silence with a typical dollar.

In Canada, a federally regulated bank has to give you a list of all charges that apply to the account, before or when you open it. A new or higher charge needs written notice at least 30 days ahead if you receive statements. A debit card replacement, if the bank charges one, belongs on that list. A credit card replacement belongs in the card agreement or the fee disclosure. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains the notice rule. It does not print a replacement dollar for every bank. Use the agreement you were given, or the fees page for your card.

A replacement after you reported the card lost or stolen is often the point of the call. Ask whether the fee is waived when the bank is reissuing the card because of fraud. Some issuers waive it in that case and charge it when you want a new card for convenience. The only way to know is the agreement or the agent reading it. Asking is not the same as a dispute. If you already paid and the agreement says the fee should not have been charged, use how to ask your bank to refund a fee.

How to avoid paying it twice

Order the replacement once, through the number on the statement or in the app the bank gave you. A second request can look like a second card. If you need it faster, ask the rush price before you agree. Write down the amount they quote and the date. When the statement arrives, match that quote. A higher amount is a question, not an automatic error, because taxes or courier fees can be separate.

Update anyone who bills the old card number only after the new card works. A subscription that retries the old number can fail and then cause a late fee somewhere else. That late fee is not the replacement fee. The subscription itself is on find subscriptions from a statement. The bank fee list for the US is on US bank fees. The Canadian list is on Canadian bank fees.

If the card was used by someone else, report that promptly and ask which charges will be removed. The replacement fee conversation and the fraud conversation can happen on the same call. Keep them labeled. US dispute steps are on dispute a charge in the US. Canadian steps are on dispute a charge in Canada.

Questions

How much is a card replacement fee?
There is no single US or Canadian dollar on the official pages opened 17 October 2026. The CFPB says a prepaid card may charge a replacement fee and that the dollar belongs on the fee chart. A bank debit or credit card uses that account's fee schedule.
Does a free checking account ban this fee?
The CFPB's free account answer lists fees a free account cannot charge, including a monthly service fee and a minimum balance fee. Card replacement is not in that banned list. Read your agreement before you assume it is $0.
Is a rush delivery the same fee?
Not always. Ask for the replacement amount and the rush amount separately, then match both to the statement. Courier or tax lines can sit beside the card fee.
