What a Norton or NortonLifeLock charge means

A Norton line is usually antivirus, a VPN, or LifeLock identity protection that renews until you stop it. The company name on the help pages is Gen. Norton and LifeLock are brands. The renewal price is the price in effect on the billing day, and Norton says the annual email states that price before the charge. This page does not invent a dollar.

What the line can say

Norton's page about an automatically renewing charge says that if you see a Norton Annual Renewal charge, you enrolled in automatic renewal on an earlier purchase from the Norton Online Store. After you enroll, you are billed once a year for as long as you stay in the program, and Norton sends a pre-billing notification email before the charge. That page does not print one required card code such as NORTON*. Match the date and the amount to the email and to Order History.

Norton's Canada FAQ says NortonLifeLock and Avast merged in 2023 and the company name is Gen. The brands it lists include Norton, Avast, LifeLock, Avira, and AVG. A line that says Gen, Norton, or LifeLock can be the same family. A separate Norton page says that in some countries a payment to Gen may be processed by a merchant entity outside your country, so the bank may treat it as an international transaction even when checkout was in your local currency. Norton says Gen does not add or keep the international, foreign transaction, or currency conversion fee. If the bank adds one, that fee is the bank's, and it is separate from Norton's price. Foreign transaction fees on the card are on foreign transaction fees.

Japan orders can show a different statement name. The refund policy says that if the charge appears as the Japanese store name, the order number path is different. That is not the usual US or Canadian line. If the name is not Norton, Gen, or LifeLock, start with unknown charge on a statement.

Why the renewal can look larger

Norton's automatic renewal page, opened 17 October 2026, says the stored payment method is charged the applicable monthly or annual renewal price unless you cancel before the day you are due to be charged. For annual subscriptions, Norton sends an email with the renewal price, the billing date, and related details before any charge. The page does not print a dollar, and it does not say every renewal is higher than the first year. Read the email. The number in that email is the number to compare with the statement.

A retail or online store prepaid term can also renew. Norton says no charge happens before the day you are due to be charged, and you cancel the renewal in the account before that day. A plan bought through an app store, a retailer, or another reseller follows that seller's terms, not only Norton's.

How to stop the next charge and ask for a refund

Norton's cancellation policy says you can contact them, or sign in, open My Account, choose My Subscriptions, then Cancel Renewal or Manage Subscriptions, and follow the screens. Allow up to 24 hours for the account to show the change, and 24 to 48 hours for the confirmation email. The paid period continues to its end. You are not charged again after that. Stopping the main subscription also stops linked add-on renewals. Stopping only an add-on does not stop the main plan.

A refund is a separate request. On the policy opened 17 October 2026, an annual plan bought from Norton is eligible for a full refund within 60 days of purchase, and each later annual charge is eligible for a full refund if you ask within 60 days of that charge. A monthly plan is eligible for a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Later monthly charges are not eligible, except for some named help desk and privacy products and except where a local rule is better. Quebec is one of those better rules: after the 60 day window, an annual charge can qualify for a prorated refund for the remaining days, and a later monthly charge can qualify for a prorated refund of the remaining days. Ask Norton which rule applies to your account. Have an order number, a product serial number, or a product key.

Third party bills, including an app store, are excluded from Norton's own refund policy. Cancel those where you paid. The shared steps are on how to cancel a subscription. McAfee is a different company, on what a McAfee charge means.

Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo groups the same merchant when a similar amount shows up again about a week, a month, or a year apart, and it lists a line that already says membership or subscription. You can also mark a name yourself. It does not cancel the plan, and it does not count the charge as savings. One month can miss a yearly renewal. The longer checklist is find subscriptions from a statement.

Questions

Does Norton print one required card code?
The pages opened on 17 October 2026 do not print a required code such as NORTON*. They do describe a Norton Annual Renewal charge, and they say the merchant on the statement can be a regional Gen payment entity.
Does the renewal email include the price?
For an annual subscription, Norton says the email includes the renewal price, the billing date, and related details before the charge. The page does not print a sample dollar.
How long do I have to ask Norton for a refund?
On the general policy, an annual charge is eligible for a full refund within 60 days of the charge, and a first monthly charge within 14 days of purchase. Later monthly charges are not eligible on that general rule. Quebec has an extra prorated path. Ask Norton which window applies.
