Non-customer check cashing fees at US banks

A non-customer check cashing fee is what a bank charges to turn a check into cash for someone who does not have an account there. There is no federal rule that makes the bank do it. If the bank agrees, it may charge a fee. The personal schedules opened for this guide do not print that dollar, so this page does not invent one.

What the federal page says

The OCC's HelpWithMyBank page, last reviewed April 2021, says there is no federal law or regulation that requires banks to cash checks for non-customers. Most banks have policies that allow check cashing only for account holders. If a bank agrees to cash a check for a non-customer, it may legally charge a fee. The page says those policies are meant to limit forgeries. The same office's words about banks on that site generally mean national banks and similar firms the OCC regulates. A state bank can have its own regulator.

A separate HelpWithMyBank page, also last reviewed April 2021, says a bank can refuse a third party check, meaning a check you are trying to cash for someone else after they endorsed it. The bank can require the payee to be present. That refusal is not a fee. It is the bank saying no.

What the bank schedules do not print

Chase's deposit account agreement says not all products and services, including check cashing, are offered at all locations. Chase's personal Additional Banking Services and Fees PDF, the file opened 19 October 2026, does not contain a non-customer check cashing dollar. Chase's education article on cashing a check without an account says the bank that issued the check may charge a fee and that the fee varies. It does not print Chase's own non-customer price. This guide does not fill that gap with a number from a news site.

Webster Bank's consumer fee schedule, the file dated in the May 2023 set, does not print a non-customer check cashing dollar either. It does print $15.00 for a returned deposit, payment, or cashed item, which is a return, not the price of cashing. A signature guarantee on that schedule is $2.00, and that is a different stamp. Bank of America's personal schedule was not reopened for a cashing line on this run, so no Bank of America dollar is printed here.

How to avoid the fee

Deposit the check into an account you already have. The teller fee the OCC describes is for cashing it over the counter when you are not a customer. A deposit at your own bank is a different service. Mobile deposit, if your bank offers it, is also a deposit. Ask the payer to pay you by direct deposit, by a transfer, or with an official check. Official check prices, when a bank prints them, are on US official check fees. A money order is on money order fees.

If you do ask a bank to cash it, ask the fee before you hand over the check. Bring a government ID. If they will not say the fee, you can leave. The fee, when it exists, should show as its own line if it is charged to an account. A person with no account may have the fee taken from the cash. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank or the card company, and it does not cancel a card or a purchase. The wider US fee map is US bank fees on a statement.

Questions

Can a bank refuse to cash a check if I have no account there?
Yes. The OCC says no federal law requires banks to cash checks for non-customers. Many banks only cash checks for their own account holders.
How much do Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo charge?
This page does not print those dollars. The Chase personal fee PDF opened 19 October 2026 does not list a non-customer check cashing fee. A number from a blog would be a guess.
What is the way to skip the fee?
Deposit the check into your own account, or ask to be paid by transfer or by an official check. Ask any teller fee before you agree to it.
