Cheque and check ordering fees in the US and Canada
A box of personal cheques is not a cashier's check and not a bank draft. Many large banks do not print one national price. They show the cost, including tax and any discount, before you submit the order. Where a page does print a dollar, it is quoted below as of 17 October 2026. Check your bank's current fee schedule, because styles and quantities change the bill.

The price is often on the order screen
Personal cheques, called checks in the United States, are the paper you write against your own account. A cashier's check or a bank draft is the bank's own instrument, and those fees are on bank draft and cashier's check fees. A returned cheque is a third charge, on returned check fees. Do not use a blog's sample price for a box of 150 as if your bank printed it.
Chase's checkbook order page says you see the cost and any discounts before you submit. You can also order at a branch. The page does not print a dollar, so this guide does not invent one. Bank of America's ordering checks FAQ is behind a zip code step and does not print a personal check price on the page that loaded. The phone on that FAQ is 844-375-7028. Wells Fargo's order checks FAQ says you can order online or call 1-800-869-3557. Business checks go through Harland Clarke at 1-800-237-8982. The personal FAQ does not print a dollar for a box of personal checks. A stop payment, if you need one later, is a separate fee and is not the price of the box.
In Canada, TD's fees at a glance page does not print one dollar for a box of cheques. Basic cheques are free on the TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan. On TD Unlimited, TD Every Day, TD Minimum, and TD Student chequing, the cheque row says the fee varies. Cheque image return is no fee on All-Inclusive and $2 a month on those other four accounts. That $2 is the image option, not the price of the paper. RBC's order page says the price varies by the number and the style. Cheques are included with Signature No Limit Banking and VIP Banking. You can order online or call 1-800-769-2511. That page does not print a dollar for a standard order. RBC's additional services table, opened the same day, says over the counter cheques are discontinued. The bank will no longer provide cheques in a branch for any account. The $2.00 fee per cheque, charged when the cheque clears, still applies to existing applicable accounts. That $2.00 is not the price of a new box.
Where a bank does print a number
Tangerine's fee schedule prints a real dollar. The first book of 50 cheques is free. Later cheque books are $50 when you order them online. The same schedule lists Canadian drafts at $10 including courier. A draft is not a replacement price for the cheque book. Use the $50 only for a later Tangerine book ordered online.
Scotiabank's personal fees page says personalized cheques are available free of charge once every 12 months from the date of the last order. The table prints Scotia Basics, 50 per order, for Scotia Value, and Scotia Basics, 100 per order, for the Ultimate Package. The Ultimate footnote says the account qualifies for one book of 100 personalized cheques per year per account, and the account must be in good standing. Other cheque styles for those accounts are at regular rates. For every other account that offers chequing, prices vary by style and quantity, details are at the branch, and taxes apply. Do not turn the free annual book into a promise that every style is free.
National Bank's services page says fees may apply when you order cheques, and it does not print a dollar. Desjardins's personal service fees guide lists an order of personalized cheques as the supplier's cost, again with no dollar. The same guide prints $17.00 to issue a US dollar cheque on a Canadian dollar account. That is a foreign currency cheque, not a box of personal cheques. First Citizens Bank's California and Massachusetts checking disclosure, effective 19 September 2026, says the check printing fee depends on the style of check ordered, and it prints counter checks at $1.00 per check. The public compare page says free checks are available for Premier checking on the first order, and for Prestige checking as unlimited exclusive designs. Primary checking is not in that free check note. Those First Citizens sentences are for the pages opened, and other states use their own disclosures.
| Bank | What the page prints | Cheaper path on that same site |
|---|---|---|
| Chase | Cost and discounts shown before you submit | Order only the style you will use. A branch can also place the order. |
| Bank of America | No personal check dollar on the FAQ that loaded | Call 844-375-7028 or finish the order screen, which is where the price appears. |
| Wells Fargo | No personal check dollar on the FAQ | Order online or call 1-800-869-3557. Business checks use a different number. |
| RBC | Price varies by style. Included with Signature No Limit and VIP | Use the included order if your package says so. Counter cheques are discontinued. |
| TD Canada Trust | All-Inclusive: basic cheques are free. Other listed accounts: fee varies | Cheque image return is $2 a month except on All-Inclusive, where it is no fee. |
| Scotiabank | One free personalized order every 12 months for the styles in the table | Scotia Value is 50 Scotia Basics. Ultimate is 100. Other styles are at regular rates. |
| Tangerine | First book of 50 is free. Later books are $50 online | Keep the first book if you rarely write cheques. A later book is the $50 line. |
| National Bank | Fees may apply. No dollar printed | Ask in the order step. Do not guess from another bank. |
| Desjardins | Personalized cheques are the supplier's cost | The guide does not print a dollar. A US dollar cheque on a Canadian account is $17.00. |
| First Citizens | Printing fee depends on style. Counter checks $1.00 each | Premier: first order free. Prestige: unlimited exclusive designs. This is the compare page, not every state. |
Ways to avoid a box you will not use
If the payment can be a bill payment inside online banking, you do not need a cheque for that bill. In Canada, an Interac e-Transfer is the usual person to person payment, and the fees for that service are on Interac e-Transfer fees. A bank draft is the right tool when a landlord or a lawyer asks for a guaranteed instrument. It has its own fee. It is not a cheaper box of cheques.
Before you reorder, look at the last statement for a cheque order line and for the account package name. Scotiabank, RBC, Tangerine, and First Citizens Premier or Prestige can include cheques only on the accounts named above. A basic account at the same bank can still show a charge. Taxes can be added even when the bank's fee is low. The order screen is the amount that will be debited. Write down that amount if it does not match the package you thought you had, then ask the bank which account is on the order.
A third party printer can sell cheques that work with your account number. This guide does not quote those prices, because they are not your bank's fee schedule. If you use one, you still need the correct routing numbers, and a misprint can cause a reject. The bank's own order is the one that already knows the account. When the charge posts, the description is often the printer's name or the words check order, not the name of the payee you will write later.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists bank fee lines it recognizes so you can see the date, the name, and the amount before you call. It does not call the bank, and it does not promise a refund. How to ask is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.
