Truist overdraft fee is $36 or none
By Karla CastroUpdated October 30, 2026
Truist One Checking does not charge overdraft fees. Truist's page, updated as of 14 October 2026, says there are no overdraft related fees on that account, meaning overdraft fees, returned item fees, negative account balance fees, and overdraft protection transfer fees. Other personal deposit accounts can still be charged. The fee schedule dated 28 September 2026 prints $36 per item, at most three a day, and no fee on a transaction under $5. Asking Truist to reverse a fee outside those rules is a request.
Truist One Checking
Opened 30 October 2026. The Truist One Checking page says it does not charge overdraft fees. The question on that page, "Does Truist One Checking have overdraft fees?", is answered "Nope. None." Disclosure 2 defines overdraft related fees as overdraft fees, returned item fees, negative account balance fees, or overdraft protection transfer fees. A Balance Buffer, for clients who qualify, can allow the account to go negative by up to $100. The page says there is no separate overdraft fee for that buffer. Once the account is overdrawn by $100, further items are typically declined or returned.
Do not use the $36 figure for Truist One Checking, Truist One Savings, Truist One Money Market, the Truist Confidence Account, or Truist Marquee Checking. The fee schedule says the $36 fee does not apply to those accounts. Match the account name on the statement. The $0 row is also in US overdraft fees by bank.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank, and it does not move the money.
The $36 fee on other personal accounts
The personal deposit accounts fee schedule dated 28 September 2026 prints an overdraft fee of $36.00 per item, per occurrence. Truist limits total overdraft fees to three per day. It waives the fee on a transaction under $5. The fee can apply to checks, in person withdrawals, ATM withdrawals, or other electronic means. Overdraft protection transfer from a Truist deposit account has no transfer fee on that schedule. A credit card or line of credit used as protection can still charge interest under that credit agreement. The same dollars are on Truist overdraft fee.
What to say on the call
Use the number on the statement. If the account is Truist One Checking: "Hello. I am calling about one line. The date is [date]. The amount is [amount]. This is Truist One Checking. Truist's page says that account does not charge overdraft fees. Please tell me what this line is. If it is an overdraft fee, I am asking you to reverse it."
If the account is one the schedule still charges: "Hello. I am calling about one overdraft fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $36. Please tell me whether the transaction was under $5, or whether three overdraft fees already posted that day. If neither is true, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it." Then wait. If they say yes, ask when the credit shows. If they say no, ask for the complaint steps. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is not tied to Truist.
What the $0 and the $36 do not promise
Truist One's lack of an overdraft fee is not a promise that every item is paid. Items past the Balance Buffer are typically declined or returned. The $36 cap of three a day is a schedule rule, not a refund program for a fee inside the cap. A fee on a transaction of $5 or more, within the three a day limit, is inside the schedule. Asking anyway is allowed. Truist can refuse. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the US opt in rule for one time debit card and ATM coverage.
