How to ask about a Chase Sapphire Preferred annual fee

You get the annual fee Chase prints for Sapphire Preferred, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions. Asking Chase to remove a fee already charged is a request. Chase can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

An annual fee is a charge for having the card. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. A welcome bonus is not the annual fee, and it is not a refund of the fee. Do not multiply a once a year fee by 12.

Match the card name on the statement. Sapphire Reserve and other Chase cards can have a different fee. How to ask about a card annual fee is the general page. Your card agreement controls the fee, not this page.

The fee on the Chase page

This amount is in US dollars. It comes from the Chase Sapphire Preferred page. Chase lists a $95 annual fee. The page points to pricing and terms for the rest of the rates. Read that box for the rate that applies to an application. This guide does not copy a variable rate range.

Monthly fees at Chase checking accounts are a different charge, on a bank account, not on this card.

Find the fee on the statement

Look in the fees section, then in the transaction list. The line may say annual fee or membership fee. Write the date and the amount. A US dollar Chase card statement stays in USD. How to read a statement PDF separates fees from purchases and payments. How fees show on a US statement is the broader list.

If Chase later credits the fee back, that credit is money returned. It is not a new expense, and it is not a subscription.

What to ask Chase

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Chase's customer service page lists 1-800-432-3117 for credit cards. If a number on your statement disagrees with that page, use the statement.

Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask what the fee is for, and ask Chase to review it or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.

If the answer is no, ask the last day you can close the card so the next annual fee is not charged. This page does not tell you to close the card. You can also send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after you have Chase's answer. US bank fees links that step. Expenvo does not file the complaint, and it does not promise the fee will be removed.
