How to ask about a Chase Sapphire Reserve annual fee

Sapphire Reserve is not Sapphire Preferred. Chase prints a higher annual fee, a fee for each authorized user, and no foreign transaction fee. A travel credit is not a waiver of the annual fee. Asking Chase to remove a fee already charged is a request. Chase can say no.

The fee on the Reserve page

Opened 19 October 2026. The Chase Sapphire Reserve page prints a $795 annual fee and $195 for each authorized user. The same page says there are no foreign transaction fees. Those three sentences are the pricing this guide uses. A welcome bonus is not the annual fee, and it is not a refund of the fee. Do not multiply a once a year fee by 12.

Match the card name on the statement. How to ask about a Chase Sapphire Preferred annual fee is the $95 card. How to ask about a card annual fee is the general page. Your card agreement controls the fee, not this page. Figures can change. If the statement and the public page disagree, use the statement and ask Chase which one applies.

A travel credit is not a fee waiver

The Reserve page describes a $300 annual travel credit. Chase says a statement credit is applied for purchases in the travel category, up to an annual maximum of $300. That credit posts against eligible travel purchases. It is not a line that says the $795 annual fee was removed. If both appear on the statement, write them as two different lines.

The same page describes other credits, including stays with The Edit, and it describes a $27 charge for an extra Priority Pass guest after the included guests. Those are not the annual fee either. A credit you did not expect can still be a credit, which is money returned, not a new subscription. How to read a statement PDF keeps fees, purchases, and credits apart.

What Chase publishes about a downgrade

Chase's downgrade article says a downgrade is a switch to a different card from the same issuer, often one with a lower annual fee or no annual fee. It says you may need to confirm eligibility, which can depend on account standing, and that you start the request on the issuer's site or by calling. It does not print a list that says Sapphire Reserve always changes to Sapphire Preferred.

Chase's cancel article says some banks allow a product change instead of closing, and it tells you to call the number on the back of the card and ask which product changes you are eligible for. Chase's upgrade article describes the other direction: a card such as Sapphire Preferred may be upgraded to Reserve if it has been open at least a year and the credit limit is at least $10,000. An upgrade is not a promise that the reverse switch is offered.

The Reserve offer terms say that if you downgrade to another Chase card and later upgrade back, spend from before the downgrade does not count toward that calendar year's $75,000 spend requirement for the extra benefits. That sentence confirms Chase uses the word downgrade. It still does not name the card you would land on. Ask Chase, with the statement in front of you. This page does not tell you to close the card or to switch.

What to ask

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Chase's customer service page lists 1-800-432-3117 for credit cards. If the statement disagrees with that page, use the statement. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask what the fee is for, and ask Chase to review it or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.

If the answer is no, ask which product changes that account is eligible for, and ask the last day you can close so the next annual fee is not charged. A refund of a fee that already posted is a different question, on can you get a credit card annual fee refunded when you cancel. You can also send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after you have Chase's answer. US bank fees links that step. Expenvo does not file the complaint.

Questions

Is the Sapphire Reserve annual fee the same as Sapphire Preferred?
No. On 19 October 2026 the Reserve page printed $795 for the card and $195 for each authorized user. The Preferred guide covers the card Chase lists at $95. Match the name on the statement.
Does the $300 travel credit pay the annual fee?
Chase describes the $300 as a statement credit on eligible travel purchases, up to that annual maximum. It is not a published waiver of the $795 annual fee. The statement shows each line.
Can I downgrade Sapphire Reserve to Sapphire Preferred?
Chase tells you to ask which product changes you are eligible for. Its public downgrade article does not say Reserve always becomes Preferred. Preferred can be a separate card. Eligibility is Chase's decision.
Will Chase remove an annual fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says Chase has to waive a fee already on the statement.
