How to avoid the Meridian Credit Union monthly fee
Meridian Credit Union prints a monthly package fee for each chequing package, and a minimum monthly balance that waives that fee on some packages. The comparison chart opened 17 October 2026 is the source for every dollar below. This is not Laurentian Bank, and it is not a US bank. How to download the PDF is on the Meridian statement guide.

The monthly package fee
The chart columns, in order, are Student, Essential, Everyday, Digital, Unlimited, Senior Everyday, Senior Unlimited, and US Dollar. The monthly package fee line reads: Student, no monthly fee. Essential, $3.00. Everyday, $9.00. Digital, $14.00. Unlimited, $19.00. Senior Everyday, $3.00. Senior Unlimited, $9.50. US Dollar, no monthly fee. Student eligibility is age 18 to 25, or enrollment in post-secondary education, with a limit of one Student package and the student as the primary account holder. Footnote 6 lists the proof of enrollment Meridian accepts if you are over 25. Seniors on the chart are age 60 and over. The other packages on the chart are age 18 and over.
A no monthly fee line is what the chart prints for Student and US Dollar. It is not a guess that every Meridian account is free. Essential does not show a balance that removes the $3.00 package fee. A promotional cash bonus on the same website is not a fee waiver. This guide does not treat a bonus offer as the monthly fee rule. The chart phone number is 1-866-592-2226. Which balance waives the package
Footnote 1 says MMB means Minimum Monthly Balance. To waive the package fee, or extra transaction fees where the chart allows it, the minimum balance must be maintained daily throughout the calendar month. One day under the number is enough to miss the waiver, because the footnote says daily. The chart's MMB to waive the package fee is: Everyday $2,000, Digital $3,000, Unlimited $5,000, Senior Everyday $2,000, Senior Unlimited $5,000. Student, Essential, and US Dollar are not applicable on that row.
A second row waives additional transaction fees, and only Digital prints a number there: $3,000. The other packages say not applicable. Digital's in branch transactions and cheques are $1.25 each only if that minimum is not maintained. If you keep the $3,000 every day, you are waiving both the $14.00 package fee and those extra Digital transaction fees. Do not apply the Digital $3,000 transaction waiver to Essential or Everyday. Those columns do not print it.
Extra transactions are a different line
Self serve transactions include bill payments by online, mobile, or telephone banking and ATMs, Interac debit purchases, pre-authorized debit, and ATM withdrawals. Included counts, then $1.25 for each extra one: Essential 15, Everyday 25, Senior Everyday 25. Student, Digital, Unlimited, Senior Unlimited, and US Dollar print unlimited on that self serve row. Footnote 2 limits the US Dollar account. Its self serve transactions are transfers between accounts and payments to Meridian US Visa credit cards. Bill payments and a full everyday debit menu are not what that footnote describes. Read footnote 2 before you treat US Dollar as unlimited everyday banking.
In branch, the chart includes 5 transactions on Student, Essential, Everyday, and Senior Everyday, then $1.25 each. Unlimited and Senior Unlimited include unlimited in branch transactions. Digital includes 0, then $1.25 if the minimum balance is not maintained. US Dollar in branch is $1 per transaction, with 0 included. Cheques follow the same pattern: 2 included, then $1.25, on Student, Essential, Everyday, and Senior Everyday. Unlimited and Senior Unlimited include unlimited cheques. Digital cheques are $1.25 if the balance is not maintained. US Dollar cheques are $1 per transaction.
Interac e-Transfer extras are $1.00. Included counts on the chart: Student 99, Essential 4, Everyday 6, Digital 99, Unlimited 99, Senior Everyday 6, Senior Unlimited 99. US Dollar says not applicable. Footnote 5 says Interac e-Transfers are charged at the time of the transfer, then refunded at month end in line with the package. A $1.00 line in the middle of the month can be a transfer that is still inside your included count. Wait for the month end credit before you treat it as a fee you will keep. More on that network fee is on Interac e-Transfer fees. Package fees at the big banks are on monthly chequing fees by bank.
Call 1-866-592-2226, or the number on the statement. Ask which package is on the account, whether the daily balance met the chart, and whether an extra transaction was inside the included count. They can say no to removing a fee. Canadian bank fees is the wider map. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is a short script. A credit union can use the same words even though the script says bank.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists bank fee lines it recognizes so you can see the date, the name, and the amount before you call. It does not call the bank, and it does not promise a refund. How to ask is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.
