Postdated cheque deposit fees at Canadian banks
A postdated cheque deposit fee is what the bank prints for holding a cheque until the date on it. It is not a stop payment, and it is not the fee for a cheque written in the wrong currency. This page copies RBC, Scotiabank, and BMO on 20 October 2026.

Holding the cheque
Opened 20 October 2026. A stop payment, which asks the bank not to pay a cheque, is on stop payment fees. A cheque in a currency other than the account is on foreign currency cheque fees. The line on your own statement is the one that counts. Upload it on the upload page. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank.
| Bank | What the page calls it | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| RBC | Post-dated cheque held for processing | $5.00 in the Personal Deposit Accounts booklet dated 3 August 2026. |
| Scotiabank | Processing a postdated deposit | $5.00 per deposit. A mailed-in deposit is a different line on the same page, at $2.00 per deposit. Do not treat those as one fee. |
| BMO | Post-dated item held for deposit | $3.00. Agreements effective 2 June 2026. |
What this page does not cover
CIBC's Personal Account Service Fees brochure dated 12 March 2026 does not print a postdated deposit dollar in the sections opened that day, so CIBC is not in the table. TD's list effective 5 March 2026 also does not print one.
Questions
- Is Scotiabank's mailed-in deposit the same $5?
- No. The fees page prints $5.00 to process a postdated deposit and $2.00 to process a mailed-in deposit. They are separate rows.
- Is a postdated deposit fee a stop payment?
- No. A stop payment asks the bank not to pay an item. These rows are for a cheque the bank holds until it can deposit it.
- Does BMO print the same $5 as RBC?
- No. BMO's agreement effective 2 June 2026 prints $3.00 for a post-dated item held for deposit. RBC's August 2026 booklet prints $5.00.
