Paper statement fees in the US and Canada
A paper statement fee is a charge for a statement the bank mails. It is not a purchase and not a subscription. The amount, if there is one, is on that bank's fee list.

Where it sits on the statement
Look in the fee lines, not in the store purchases. The printed name is often paper statement, statement fee, or a similar phrase. Write the date and the amount. A PDF from the bank is the file Expenvo reads. A fee for mailing paper is a separate line from that download.
There is no single US or Canadian price on the regulator pages linked here. Ask the bank for the fee list for your account. Expenvo can show the fee line. It does not promise the bank will remove it.
United States
Many banks offer electronic statements and charge for paper. That charge is allowed when it is disclosed. It is not allowed to bill for a statement the bank never tried to produce.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported that some institutions charged monthly fees for paper statements, and extra fees when mail came back, even though they had not printed or mailed the statement. Examiners called that an unfair practice. The institutions stopped charging those fees for statements they did not try to deliver. If you were charged and no statement arrived, ask the bank what was mailed. After you have the bank's answer, you can send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Expenvo does not file it.
Canada
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says a federally regulated institution must give you a list of all the service charges on the account. A paper statement fee, if the account has one, belongs on that list. Ask for a copy.
The same agency says a bank may send required information electronically instead of on paper, but only after you expressly agree. The agreement can be spoken or written. If you agree out loud, the bank still has to give you the details in writing without delay. The consent has to name what it covers, such as monthly statements. If you did not agree to electronic statements and you are being charged for paper, ask which agreement is on the account. Those are different questions from asking the bank to remove one fee.
Questions
- Is a paper statement fee the same at every bank?
- No. The regulator pages linked here do not print one national amount. The fee, if there is one, is on your bank's fee list.
- Can a US bank charge for a statement it did not mail?
- The CFPB found cases where that happened and called it unfair. A disclosed fee for a statement the bank did print and mail is a different case. Ask what was sent.
- Can a Canadian bank switch me to electronic statements?
- FCAC says the bank needs your express consent before it sends required information electronically. The consent has to list what it covers.
- Is the paper fee a subscription?
- No. It is a bank fee for mailing a statement. Keep it on the fee list, not the subscription list.
