Returned deposit fees at Canadian banks
A returned deposit is a cheque or payment you put into the account that later comes back. An NSF fee is a payment you sent that your bank does not pay. This page is the deposit that comes back. The NSF table is on [Canada NSF fees by bank](/guides/canada-nsf-fees-by-bank).

The fee when a deposit comes back
Opened 20 October 2026. US banks that print a returned-deposit dollar are on returned deposit and returned item fees in the US. The line on your own statement is the one that counts. Upload it on the upload page. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank.
| Bank and item | Fee the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| RBC, a deposited or cashed item returned unpaid | $7.00 | The booklet calls this a chargeback: an item deposited or cashed that is returned unpaid. There is no charge on the VIP Operating Account and VIP Companion Accounts when the accounts are in the same geographic location. |
| Scotiabank, a deposited cheque or pre-authorized debit returned | No charge | The day-to-day companion booklet prints no charge for each cheque or pre-authorized debit deposited and subsequently returned, for third party items deposited to the account. A business fee guide is a different schedule and is not this row. |
| TD, a returned foreign deposit | $15.00 | The list of services effective 5 March 2026 prints $15.00 for a returned foreign deposit. If the cheque is in a different currency from the account, TD buys that currency back at the rate it sets when the deposit is returned. The same list does not print a separate dollar for an ordinary Canadian dollar cheque that comes back. |
Banks left out
BMO's everyday banking booklet prints $5.00 for a foreign currency cheque deposited to a Canadian dollar account. That line is the cost of depositing a foreign cheque. It is not labeled as a returned item, so BMO is not in this table. CIBC's personal account service fees PDF opened the same day did not print a returned-deposit dollar.
The money can still leave the account when the cheque comes back, even when the fee line is $0 or is missing. Scotiabank's holds section says you are responsible for a cheque you deposit that is returned, including after a hold ends. The fee and the reversal of the deposit are two amounts.
Questions
- Is a returned deposit the same as an NSF fee?
- No. A returned deposit is an item you put in that comes back. An NSF fee is a payment you made that the bank returns because the account cannot cover it. Canada NSF fees by bank is the second one.
- Does Scotiabank charge for a cheque I deposited that bounces?
- The personal day-to-day booklet prints no charge for a cheque or pre-authorized debit deposited and later returned, for third party items. The deposit itself can still be reversed.
- Is TD's $15.00 the fee for any returned cheque?
- The March 2026 list prints $15.00 for a returned foreign deposit. It does not print a separate dollar for an ordinary Canadian dollar cheque that comes back.
