Returned deposit and returned item fees in the US
Two different things get called a returned item. One is a cheque you deposited that the other bank sends back. The other is a payment you made that your bank returns because the account cannot cover it. This page keeps those lines apart and copies only the dollars the bank's own page prints.

A deposit that comes back
Opened 16 October 2026. If the page does not print a dollar for this event, the bank is not given a guessed number.
| Bank and item | Fee the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo, a cashed or deposited item unpaid for any reason | No fee | That is the domestic line in the consumer account fee schedule. An international item returned unpaid is a different line at $15 each. |
| PNC, return of a deposited or cashed item | No charge | The consumer schedule effective February 22, 2026 also prints no charge to redeposit a returned deposited or cashed item. |
| U.S. Bank, a foreign check collection that is returned | $35.00 | This is the Returned Check Fee inside foreign check collection, effective August 10, 2026. Checks on Canadian banks, when not sent for collection, are $6.00. Checks on select countries or banks are $12.00. This row is not a domestic deposited cheque. |
| Citizens, a foreign check returned | $25 | The fees guide marked Rev Oct 2026 prints Foreign Check Returned at $25. A Canadian cheque deposit sent for collection is a different fee, $30 under $100,000 and $50 at $100,000 or more. |
A payment your bank returns
This is the item you wrote or authorized, not a cheque you deposited. US overdraft fees by bank is the fee for an item the bank pays. The rows here are the fee for an item it sends back.
| Bank | Fee the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo, returned item or non-sufficient funds | No fee | The consumer schedule prints no fee when Wells Fargo returns the item. Paying the item into overdraft is the separate $35 line, and that fee does not apply to Clear Access Banking. |
| Citi everyday, Citi Priority, and Citigold checking | No returned item fee | The compare page prints No Overdraft or Returned Item Fees for those tiers. It also says Citibank may still return or pay an item when there is not enough money. |
| Bank of America | No Overdraft Item Fee when the item is returned | The schedule effective August 7, 2026 says Bank of America does not charge an Overdraft Item Fee when it declines or returns an item unpaid. The payee may still charge you. The same schedule does not print a separate dollar for a deposited item that comes back. |
| Chase personal accounts | No overdraft fee when the item is returned | The Additional Banking Services and Fees document says you are not charged an overdraft fee if your check or ACH is returned unpaid. If that item is presented again and paid, an overdraft fee can apply. The document does not print a separate dollar for a cheque you deposited that comes back. |
Questions
- Is a returned deposit the same fee as a returned payment?
- No. A returned deposit is a cheque you put in that the other bank sends back. A returned payment is an item you made that your bank does not pay. Wells Fargo prints no fee for both of those domestic lines, and $15 for an international item returned unpaid.
- Does no fee from the bank mean nobody charges you?
- No. Bank of America says the payee may still charge you when an item is returned. Wells Fargo says third parties or other banks may impose charges for returned items.
- Why is the U.S. Bank $35.00 not in the domestic row?
- That $35.00 is the returned check fee inside foreign check collection. The schedule does not use it as the fee for an ordinary domestic deposit.
