Inactivity and dormant account fees at US banks
An inactivity fee, sometimes called a dormant account fee, is a charge when you have not used the account for a period the bank names. There is no single US dollar. On 16 October 2026 only two of the schedules opened printed one. The others are left out rather than filled in from memory.

The fee the page prints
Opened 16 October 2026. A monthly service fee is a different line. Monthly checking account fees by bank is that list.
| Account | Fee the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| Citizens checking | $10, then $5 a month | The fees guide marked Rev Oct 2026 prints an initial $10 after one year of inactivity, then $5 per month. It is charged when the account owners have no transaction activity for one year or more, and then in each later month with no activity. |
| Citizens savings and money market | $10, then $5 a month | Initial $10 after two years of inactivity, then $5 per month. There is no dormant account fee on EverValue Checking, Student Checking, or the Private Bank checking, savings, and money market accounts named in the footnote. The same section says these fees do not apply if you keep an active banking relationship on any other deposit account where you are the primary signer. |
| U.S. Bank | $5.00 a month | Dormant account fee in the consumer pricing information effective August 10, 2026. The line says unless excluded by account type or prohibited or restricted by state law. |
Pages that did not print this fee
These pages were opened on 16 October 2026 and did not print an inactivity or dormant dollar: Chase's Additional Banking Services and Fees, Bank of America's personal schedule effective August 7, 2026, Wells Fargo's consumer account fee schedule, Citi's compare page, PNC's consumer schedule effective February 22, 2026, TD Bank's U.S. personal fee schedule, and the Capital One 360 Checking page. Huntington's page returned an error. The Regions LifeGreen fee PDF did not open. This guide does not turn that silence into a $0 fee.
If the account has been unused long enough for the state to treat it as abandoned, that is a separate escheatment rule. Citizens prints a separate escheatment servicing fee. This page does not copy a state-by-state waiting period. How fees show on a US statement is where to look for the line.
Questions
- Does every US bank charge $5 or $10 for inactivity?
- No. On 16 October 2026, Citizens and U.S. Bank printed a dormant fee. The Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, PNC, TD Bank, and Capital One pages opened did not print one.
- When does Citizens start the checking fee?
- After one year with no transaction activity by the account owners. The first charge is $10. Each later month with no activity is $5. Savings and money market use two years, not one.
- Can a state ban the fee?
- U.S. Bank's line says the $5.00 dormant fee applies unless the account type excludes it or state law prohibits or restricts it. This page does not list those states.
