How to get a PNC overdraft fee refunded

The $36.00 fee and the one-a-day cap

Opened 20 October 2026. An Overdraft Item fee is assessed when PNC pays an item. It applies to overdrafts created by check, in-person withdrawal, ATM withdrawal, or other electronic means. The amount is $36.00 per item. The maximum number of overdraft fees is 1 per day. A returned item, also called non-sufficient funds or NSF, has no charge. The Spend monthly service charge on this schedule is $7.00, waived with a $500 combined average monthly balance in Spend and Reserve, $500 in qualifying direct deposits, an account holder age 62 or over, or a PNC employee. That monthly charge is not the overdraft fee.

Extra Time and the $5.00 threshold

If you bring the available balance to at least $0 before the Extra Time period expires, PNC will not charge the Overdraft Item fees incurred during that period. The schedule opened today does not print the clock time when Extra Time ends. Do not copy an hour from another bank.

The overdraft balance threshold is $5.00. If the account is overdrawn by $5.00 or less after all transactions are posted for the day, any overdraft item fees are automatically refunded.

Overdraft Protection transfer from Reserve, then Growth, or from another PNC deposit account you set up, is no charge on this schedule. A transfer from a line of credit or a credit card is a minimum of $50.00, and a credit card transfer can be a cash advance. The transfer fee line itself says no charge. A transfer is coverage. It is not a refund of a fee that already posted after Extra Time ended.

What to say on the call

PNC prints 1-888-762-2265 (1-888-PNC-BANK) on the schedule. If the statement prints a different number, use the statement. "Hello. I am calling about one Overdraft Item fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $36.00. Please tell me whether Extra Time already covers it, because the available balance was brought to at least $0 before Extra Time ended, or whether the account was overdrawn by $5.00 or less after the day's items posted. If neither is true, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."

Then wait. If they remove it, ask when the credit shows. If they do not, ask for the complaint steps. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is not tied to PNC.

What Extra Time does not promise

Extra Time and the $5.00 threshold are PNC's rules on this schedule. They are not a promise for a fee that remained after Extra Time ended and after the account was overdrawn by more than $5.00. One fee a day is the cap. It is not a refund program for a fee inside the cap. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the US opt-in rule. PNC can still say no.
