Safe deposit box fees in the US and Canada

A safe deposit box is an annual rent, billed by the bank, not a purchase from a store. The Canadian banks below print sizes and dollars. Chase prints 'varies' and says it does not rent new boxes. Bank of America's FAQ tells you to ask the branch. Check your bank's current fee schedule, and the branch, before you count on a size being available.

United States pages that do not print one national rent

Chase's personal fee schedule, effective 14 June 2026, lists safe deposit box annual rent as varying by size and location, including sales tax where it applies, disclosed on your annual invoice, and assessed at lease renewal. The same line says Chase currently does not rent new safe deposit boxes. Chase Private Client Checking includes a 20 percent discount on annual rent for any size, and it repeats that new boxes are not being rented. There is no Chase dollar to quote. If your invoice shows a rent, that invoice is the number, not a figure from this page.

Bank of America's financial center FAQ says most financial centers offer safe deposit boxes, and that availability and fees come from the local financial center. It does not print a rent. Wells Fargo's consumer fee page opened 17 October 2026 does not print a safe deposit rent, so Wells Fargo is left out of the dollar list. Comerica's Southeast Michigan brochure prints discounts, not the underlying rent: Rich Rewards is up to 25 percent off, with a $50 maximum, plus $5 off with auto pay. A 25 percent discount is not the rent. Do not invent the missing base price. A cashier's check fee is a different line, on bank draft and cashier's check fees.

TD, RBC, and Scotiabank

TD's list of services and fees, effective 5 March 2026, prints safety deposit box annual rental: small $80.00, medium $135.00, large $200.00, oversize $10.00 per square inch. Visit the branch to see which sizes exist. Fees are subject to applicable taxes. A replacement key is $50.00. Drilling and a replacement lock are $200.00. A billing fee notice, if the box is not paid automatically, is $5.00. Late payment is $5.00. Check your bank's current fee schedule if you are looking at a statement after that effective date.

RBC's safe deposit box page lists annual fees as of 3 August 2026: small $80, medium $135, medium/large $230, large $350, extra large $500. GST, QST, or HST is added. RBC VIP Banking has a $60 per year discount. Signature No Limit, No Limit, and Day to Day pay the regular fees on that table. RBC's additional services page says rentals start at $80.00 a year plus tax, which matches the small box, and it says an annual discount is included with VIP. The size table is the page to use for a specific box. One lost key is $25.00 plus tax. Two lost keys are $200.00 plus tax, including the lock, keys, and locksmith. Boxes are requested at a branch.

Scotiabank Canada's fees page prints safety deposit boxes: A, 1.5 by 5 by 24 inches, $80.00. B, 2.5 by 5 by 24 inches, $120.00. Another B, 3.5 by 5 by 24 inches, $120.00. C sizes at $200.00. D, 5 by 10.375 by 24 inches, $350.00. E, 10 by 10.75 by 24 inches, $450.00. Taxes apply. Footnote 8 says the primary holder of an Ultimate Package account who is also the primary box holder gets an $80.00 fee discount, the value of a small box, once a year, while the account is in good standing, subject to availability. One discount per Ultimate Package. The page was opened 17 October 2026. Check your bank's current fee schedule before you treat a size as available at your branch.

CIBC and BMO

CIBC's additional service fees page lists safety deposit boxes per year, plus taxes: small $80, medium $135, large $250, extra large $500 and up depending on size. Sizes vary by location. Rent is paid in advance. If you close the box within one year of opening, CIBC refunds rent for the months left, up to a maximum of 6 months. After the first full year, the refund is pro rated on the remaining months. A lost key is $15 Canadian per key, plus taxes. Drilling the box and replacing lost keys is $200 Canadian, plus taxes. CIBC Smart Account materials mention $10 off the annual rental. That discount is not the rent. Read your account's benefit list before you subtract $10.

BMO Canada's safety deposit box page prints annual rental in Canadian dollars: small $70.00, medium $110.00, large $230.00, extra large $350.00, super large $500.00. GST, HST, or QST is extra where it applies. Not every size is at every branch. A key replacement is $15 per key. Single lock drilling and key replacement is $160. Dual lock drilling and key replacement is $200. You rent in a branch, and you pay annually from a BMO chequing account. The page says seniors, newcomers, and Premium chequing customers can get discounts, and it tells you to ask the branch for eligibility. It does not print those discount dollars on the page opened here, so they are not invented. The same rents appear in the everyday banking booklet effective 2 June 2026. Boxes are not CDIC insured. BMO says you arrange insurance for the contents. The phone on the box page is 1-877-225-5266.

Servus Credit Union's personal banking plans brochure, effective 1 December 2025, prints a safety deposit discount on some plans, not a rent. Premium Unlimited shows a $20 discount. Senior Unlimited shows a $10 discount. Other current plans on that row are not applicable. Do not turn the discount into a rent. Package fees are on how to avoid the Servus monthly fee. If the rent on your statement does not match the size you rented, ask the branch which size is on the lease. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is a short script. A credit union can use the same questions.

Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists bank fee lines it recognizes so you can see the date, the name, and the amount before you call. It does not call the bank, and it does not promise a refund. How to ask is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.

Questions

Why is there no Chase or Bank of America dollar?

On the pages opened 17 October 2026, TD small is $80, RBC small is $80 as of 3 August 2026, Scotiabank size A is $80, CIBC small is $80, and BMO small is $70. Taxes are extra. Check your bank's current fee schedule and whether your package includes a discount.
