How to ask about an American Express Gold annual fee in the US
This page is the US American Express Gold Card. It is not the Canada Cobalt card, and it is not Platinum. The public pages opened for this guide print a $325 annual fee on the basic card. Asking American Express to remove a fee already charged is a request.

The fee on the Gold pages
Opened 19 October 2026. The US Gold Card page says the annual fee is $325 for a basic card. Additional cards, up to the first 5, have a $0 annual fee. The sixth or later additional card is $35 each. The prospect terms print the same $325, a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the cash advance, whichever is greater, and a foreign transaction fee of none. The terms page says American Express will not charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases outside the United States, and that an ATM or a merchant may still charge its own fee.
The cardmember agreement PDF dated 31 March 2026 prints an annual fee of $325, foreign transaction of none, a late payment fee of up to $40, and a returned payment fee of up to $40. It says American Express will not charge for the first 5 additional cards and will charge $35 for each additional card after that. It also prints an account re-opening fee of $25 if the account is cancelled, you ask them to re-open it, and they do. Variable rates in that agreement move with the Prime Rate and are capped at 29.99%. This guide does not copy a rate that depends on today's Prime. How to ask about an Amex Platinum annual fee is a different card. How to ask about an Amex Cobalt annual fee is the Canada card.
Credits are not the annual fee
The Gold page describes statement credits and Uber Cash that require enrollment, including up to $10 a month at named restaurants, $10 in Uber Cash each month, up to $7 a month at US Dunkin', and up to $100 a year at Resy split into two halves of the year. Those are credits against eligible purchases after you enroll. They are not a published waiver of the $325 annual fee. If a credit and the annual fee both appear, write them as separate lines.
The page also says the Gold Card does not currently have lounge access. Do not treat a missing lounge visit as a fee dispute. A charge you do not recognize is an unknown charge on a statement. A fee with the words annual fee or annual membership fee is this page.
When the agreement says the fee can come back
The 31 March 2026 agreement says American Express will refund the annual fee if you notify them that you are voluntarily closing the account within 30 days after the closing date of the billing statement on which that fee appears. After that 30 day period, the annual fee is non-refundable. If an annual fee applies to an additional card, the agreement points you to that same closing section. If your billing address is in Massachusetts when you close, the agreement says that refund policy does not apply to you. Close by calling or writing. This page does not tell you to close the card.
That window is the rule in the agreement file opened for this guide. A different American Express card can use different words. The general page is can you get a credit card annual fee refunded when you cancel. Read the agreement for the card in your hand. The agreement also says an eligible annual fee can be added to a Pay Over Time balance when that feature is on. That is a way of paying the fee. It is not a waiver.
What to ask
Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask whether the line is the basic card or an additional card past the fifth. Then ask American Express to review the fee or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate. The public Gold page does not print a downgrade menu and does not print a retention offer. If you want a different card, ask what product changes that account is eligible for, and do not assume a switch is offered.
If the answer is no, ask the last day of the refund window on your own statement, because the 30 days run from the closing date of the statement that showed the fee, not from the day you noticed it. You can also send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after you have their answer. US bank fees links that step.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank or the card company, and it does not cancel a card or a purchase.
Questions
- Is the US Gold Card $325 on every American Express card?
- No. $325 is the basic-card annual fee on the US Gold pages opened on 19 October 2026. Platinum, Cobalt, and Blue Cash Preferred are different cards with their own pages.
- Do additional Gold cards cost $35 each?
- The card page and the 31 March 2026 agreement say the first 5 additional cards have no annual fee, and each additional card after that is $35. Count the cards on the account before you use the $35 figure.
- Does no foreign transaction fee mean the annual fee is $0?
- No. The terms page prints a $325 annual fee and a foreign transaction fee of none. Those are different lines. A merchant or an ATM can still add its own fee.
- If I close the card, is the annual fee refunded?
- The 31 March 2026 agreement refunds it if you voluntarily close within 30 days after the closing date of the statement that billed it. After that, it says the fee is non-refundable. Massachusetts addresses are excepted in that agreement. Confirm the date on your statement.
