How to get a U.S. Bank overdraft fee refunded
U.S. Bank's overdraft page prints a $36 Overdraft Paid Fee when it covers a transaction. The disclosure caps that at three fees a day and can waive the fee through Overdraft Fee Forgiven if qualifying deposits bring the available balance to at least $0 by 11 p.m. ET. A refund outside that rule is a request. U.S. Bank can say no.

The $36.00 fee and the daily cap
Opened 20 October 2026. The overdraft page says you may be charged a $36 Overdraft Paid Fee for each transaction U.S. Bank covers. The disclosure says a fee may be assessed when the available balance at the end of the business day is or would be overdrawn by $50.01 or more and the transaction paid is $5.01 or more. If that balance is or would be overdrawn by $50.00 or less, an Overdraft Paid Fee will not be assessed. U.S. Bank limits the number of charges to a daily maximum of three Overdraft Paid Fees per day, no matter how many items it pays. The row is in Overdraft and NSF fees by bank (2026) and in US overdraft fees by bank. The monthly fee is on how to waive a U.S. Bank monthly fee.
Standard overdraft coverage can apply to checks and automatic payments. ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card transactions are optional additional coverage and are not enrolled by default. This page is consumer checking other than Safe Debit.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank, and it does not move the money.
Overdraft Fee Forgiven
If the account is overdrawn by $50.01 or more, Overdraft Fee Forgiven gives you time to get the fee reversed. Make qualifying deposits to cover the overdraft by 11 p.m. ET on the day the Overdraft Paid Fee was charged, and U.S. Bank says it will reverse the charge that day.
The page says U.S. Bank reviews the account at the end of the Overdraft Fee Forgiven period, 11 p.m. ET. If the available balance, excluding the Overdraft Paid Fees and including immediate and same day deposits, is at least $0, U.S. Bank waives the Overdraft Paid Fees charged. Qualifying deposits include ACH and electronic deposits, cash, wires, ATM deposits at U.S. Bank ATMs, check deposits in a branch, and internal transfers from another U.S. Bank account. Mobile check deposit and some new-account deposits generally do not qualify. Safe Debit accounts are excluded.
Overdraft Protection is separate. A transfer from a linked U.S. Bank deposit account has no transfer fee on the page opened today. That transfer is how an item is covered. It is not the forgiveness review.
A short script
Use the number on the statement. "Hello. I am calling about one Overdraft Paid Fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $36. Please tell me whether Overdraft Fee Forgiven already waives it, because qualifying deposits brought the available balance, not counting the fees, to at least $0 by 11 p.m. ET. Also tell me whether the account was overdrawn by $50.00 or less, or the transaction paid was under $5.01. If none of those apply, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."
Then stop. If they waive it, ask when the credit shows. If they do not, ask for the complaint steps. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the script for any bank.
What forgiveness does not cover
Forgiveness is U.S. Bank's own window, ending 11 p.m. ET on the day the fee was charged. It is not a next-day program, and it does not include Safe Debit. A fee that remains because the available balance was still negative at that time is outside the sentence the page prints. Asking anyway is allowed. U.S. Bank can refuse. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the US opt-in rule for one-time debit card and ATM coverage. It does not require U.S. Bank to remove a fee already on the statement.
